CMS, Databases, Categories, Smart Content etc

Forgive me in advance, but I really do not understand why my Categories and Smart Content keep disappearing.

I am running the latest version of DS 4.6.2.118, but this problem has been an ongoing irritation for over a year now, way back with the first version of 4.5 All will work fine for months, then out of the blue it all disappears....no Categories, no Smart Content, no Product listings....nada......!

Yes, I have followed all the fixes, re-installs, database deletions, re-importing all the MetaData....et Naeusism. I don't have 4.5 hours to waste re-importing everything each time it goes tits up.

Is the Valentina DB that flaky? What the hell do I and all of us do to fix this problem? Yeah, OK, maybe you don't use Categories or Smart Content, but that is just sticking your head in a bucket of sand. It is not a solution.

I have used Poser for years, since it first came on the scene but I was so impressed with DAZ Studio when it arrived on the scene and what it could do (yes ver 3) that I took to it like a duck to water.
Fabulous interface, easy to use and navigate and all in all what I really needed...

But now, well, I have real misgivings. I have invested a lot of time and money, not to mention most of my art is now DUF based not PZ3.

If you have any constructive advice please let me know. Otherwise please do not fill this post with timewasting nothingness, basically because I am frustrated beyond belief.

Thanks,

Stiks

First...versions. Studio? Operating System? Bit count (32/64)?

Is the CMS staying 'on'...does it suddenly quit? If so, are there any errors in the log (they are in a subfolder with CMS executable)?

For Windows user, don't install CMS to Program Files folders and don't place the database in ProgramData folder. Best solution, delete CMS and learn to use the 100% reliable Content Library tab.

First TIP: Never install any content EVER with DAZ Studio open. That includes Hand installed content from other sites. This is a known way to blow the Database.

Second TIP: If you suddenly lose Smart Content when it was just working 99% of the time it is a Blown Database file. You will need to create a new one. No way around that.

Third TIP: Be sure to Export USER data often if you use Categories. I suggest once after each update to your categories. Do the work, exit DS, yes if it fails it is gone but close any way, Open DS again. Once it all populates EXPORT User data. You now know that work is safe and the Database is still error free.

Fourth TIP: A Blown Database can and will shut down the CMS fully. Always check to see if it is Running before you try to recover a Database.

Fifth TIP: Anti Virus software and or OS updates have set the CMS to not ALLOWED status in the Services. If you had any updates Check the CMS's Service status, be sure it is still an allowed service.

FYI: I'm now into my 3rd month with ZERO database errors by just making 100% sure DAZ Studio is not open when I install content. I still do the User export shuffle just to be safe.

    Firstly, thanks for the replies.

Version: DAZ Studio Pro 4.6.2.118 64 bit.

OS: OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion 64 bit.

    Machine: iMac 27"

I never, ever install content with DS open. Never. I only do manual installs, no DIM at all.

I do Export UserData after each and every Category update. So I know I can get the Categories back.

CMS does not stop running and it is the first thing that I check to see if it is still running when it happens.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. For inexplicable reasons Categories and Smart Content just disappear and CMS is still running. Well, according to the Activity Monitor (same as Windows Services) anyway.

I use Categories extensively because remembering a vendor's name or what a particular item is called with over 500 Gb of content is difficult and I find Categories to be a very efficient way of working.

I'm not that fussed with Smart Content but it is handy from time to time.

I understand that if the DB blows up I need to rebuild it. It's just that it takes over 4.5 hours to complete, and that is 4.5 hours I could have been working.

I just wish it would stop blowing up on me....[sigh].

Thanks again. Looks like a DB rebuild is on the cards for today...

Its the Service asking the OS to allow it to go live. As long as one port opens its fine.

Don't worry about the wrong license/deployment serial stuff -- that just means you have the end-user license rather than the developer license.

That never bothered me. I knew if the Port opened the code was still valid. Now I understand the rest. TY for the info.

Well, well, well. Here we go again.

I've had six (6) wonderful days with DS running very smoothly...then BANG.....it all disappears again! No Categories, Products or Smart Content.

And all I did was to use Content DB Maitenance -> Export User Data, because I had added 20 or so items into Categories.......as advised....just in case.

This is not an attempt to denigrate DS, I still love it it's an awesome product. Nor do I believe anyone has a solution, I simply need to vent.

And before you reply to this post I do not use Windows, I only use OS X 10.8.5 on my iMac, so please do not post any Windoze type solutions or remedies.

Why I ask, why? I am now in the process of rebuilding the DB for the second time in 6 days.....[makes me want to cry, really].

It takes 4-5 hours to complete each and every time. Really? Is the DB that fragile...????

Anyway, back to crying in my beer......

One thing that helps on MacOSX is to "Mark All Content As Seen" frequently. When you enter a folder in which some of the content is marked as new, the CMS has to mark those as seen in the database, which on OSX sometimes causes corruption.

There is hope on the horizon, however, judging from the DS Change Log: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/change_log#private_channel

That is the best news I have heard in a long while...:-) Thank you for letting me know. Do you have a timeframe for this? I t will really make my day.

As a professional DBA moving to PostgreSQL is definitely a step in the right direction.

BTW, the DB rebuild took 4 hours 48 minutes to complete on DS 4.6.2.118

    Cheers.

I would be very interested in being a pre-beta or a beta tester for this if they are interested as I only use OS X 10.8.5, although I could create a Mavericks 10.9.2 boot partition if required.

    Anyway, just food for thought.

That has more to do with amount of content than version of DS...

I was just using Disk Warrior for routine maintenance and it found that the DAZ3D vlog folder has over 2 million items in it, it’s 1.29 GB! Holy Expletive!

    Can I delete the contents?
I’m not having problems w/ DS, just want to clean up.

    thanks

Wow, wonder what that's about? I've got 57 items, about 1K each. I'm not on a Mac, but I'll see if someone can advise you on that.

    Hello,

    (1) Have you se your vserver in debugmode, then it will be chatty, but the logs can be tossed,
Second, why havent you upgraded to the postgres CMS (should be in dim), or if you have done that the vlogs are just dead weight from ancient times.

    Thanks Totte.
I deleted the logs and everything seems to be running fine. I am using postgres.
Before I did this I quit CMS using Stop DAZ Content Management Service in utilies

I'm watching Activity Monitor (all processes) and DAZ Content Management Service is running again. All seems good.

and my MAC has a bit more room to breathe by getting rid of 1.3 GB of logs!

FYI, if you are using PostgreSQL, you no longer need to use nor start/stop the DAZ Content Management Service. You can uninstall it too if you want, since it's not getting used for anything anymore (provided you don't have Carrarra using it, can't remember if that's still the case) and it makes no sense to keep it running otherwise.

The PostgreSQL CMS gets started/stopped when you start/stop DAZ Studio (the exception being if you have other applications open that also use it), you can see it running as a bunch of postgres.exe processes in Windows Task Manager, and you can also start/stop it from within DAZ Studio in the Content Library pane's menu.
