    My second project will be a folktale that may be based on a real person, John Henry.  In the folk tale, John Henry is a railroad worker.  The railroad decides to try using steam powered spike drivers.  John Henry says men can do it faster and better.  He has a race against the steam drill.  He wins but he exhausts himself and dies shortly afterwards. There are old folk songs and recordings.  There is a historical marker claiming to be the place of the race.  Disney made a film.  https://youtu.be/MuNckYmnkC0

     

    In contemplating my approach, I think I will

    - use TangoAlpha's end of the tracks set

    - model my own railroad worker clothes for genesis (meshes below)

    - model a steam drill, although I'm not sure it will make it in the image

     

     

     

     

    wow another great concept - blink and you'll miss it as the saying goes - terrific to see Tango Alpha's set in action

    Test of the character and clothing figures for John Henry.  I used Genesis 1.  The body is a mixture of Michael 5 and bodybuilder morphs.  The head and texture maps are from a character called Benjamin for M5  https://www.daz3d.com/benjamin-for-m5.  The Benjamin character comes bundled with Carrara 8.5 Pro.  https://www.daz3d.com/carrara-8-5-pro

    Clothing items modeled in Carrara and used the transfer utility in the Daz Studio plugin to make conforming.

    John Henry update.

    Here is a render from camera 7 of TangoAlpha's End of the Tracks product.  I moved the camera aroun d and changed the zoom to get the shot along the tracks that I wanted.

    I placed that in the backdrop of a new scene.  I loaded Genesis and applied my John Henry character, conformed my overalls outfit, and modeled a hammer.  I placed some cubes as shadow catchers and ried to match up with the railway.

    And a little postwork.

    Thank you, de3an.  I will create a substitute tool.  yesyes

    I'm actually not happy with the pose and scene setup.  I really have to decide if I want the image to be about John Henry"s heroic performance against technology, in which case I need to give it more of a feeling of a race with onlookers.  Or, I need to embrace Headwax's dark side and show John Henry's exhaustion or post-race death.

    But whichever way I take it, I need to give him a more appropriate spike.

    Pecos Bill and Slue-Footed Sue

    While I reconsider my approach to John Henry, I'm thinking about a third project.  There are some folktales from the American West that might be fun.

    Now, Pecos Bill had a way with wimmen. No doubt. He had dozens of wives during his time. But his one true love was Slue-foot Sue. She was his first wife - and she could ride almost as good as Bill himself.

    Bill first saw Slue-foot Sue ridin' a catfish down the Rio Grande. She was riding standing up and holdin' on with only one hand sose she could take pot-shots at the clouds with her six-shooter. Was making a right pretty pattern too. Bill jest went head over heels for her. Proposed on the spot. They was married the next day too.

    Sue was dressed in one of them white jobs with the large hoops. Looked plumb beautiful. Right after they was married, Sue insisted Bill prove how much he loved her by letting her ride his horse, Widow-maker. Bill couldn't talk her out of it, so Sue climbed on that great devil of a horse.

    Well, Widow-Maker bucked like a maniac, jest as you'd expect. Sue was thrown off - clear up to the clouds. Luckily, Sue was still wearing her springy hoop. When she hit the ground, she bounced up again. But we all soon realized Sue couldn't stop bouncing. She bounced so high she kept hitting her head on the moon. She was crying and crying buckets of tears, and throwin' kisses to her new husband. But even he couldn't stop her bouncing.

    We waited three days and four nights. Finally, even Bill realized that she was gonna starve to death before she stopped bouncing, so he had to shoot her. It was a cryin' shame. Well, time heals wounds, and Bill finally got married again. And again. And again. But I'm tellin' you, he never felt the same about another woman as he felt for his first wife, Slue-foot Sue.

    Not By The Hair Of My Chinny Chin-Chin!

     

    I've long admired Headwax's fairy tale book illustrations.  This Challenge theme can be interpreted in many ways, but I've decided to stick with more traditional characters and stories, as I have never attempted to illustrate a popular fairy tale.  Not saying that the scenes will be traditional, but the characters should hopefully be recognizable.  Maybe a kind of fractured fairy tale. smiley

    The pig is the Frankie character from Rendo.  Big Bad Wolf and the Muelsfell cannon (modified) are in the Daz library of products.

    In Carrara, I visited the hair room, plant room, modeling room, text room, shader/displacement room, and the particle room (new for me).  GMIC Lylejk filter.

    No postwork.

    Excellent perspective, UB.  The pig's pose and expression are priceless.  Did you use the particles for the sparks?

    Diomede - perfect job on the overalls, the wrinkles add a bit of veracity - thanks for the kindness donating the overalls! hop i get a chance to use them :)

    I wanted to go a little retro with this so I used Mat and Maddie - I can tell you the k4 figures were a great improvment!

    Hansel and Gretel - post wotk in affinity photo, fotosketcher, filter forge and photodonut - spoilt for choice!

    the shoe house has a P4 and a PP version.

    which one do you usually pick when it gives the option?  what's the difference?

  • PP is the better choice for both Carrara and DAZ studio as less likely to use mc6 files

    I love that set.  Last year, I started to model a shoe house, daydreaming becoming a PA, then I realized I already owned one.  surprise

    Magnificent color choices.  This one zings, as HW would say.  Dog is a wonderful touch.  With so much time left, wonder if you'd consider applying hair to the dog.  Totally unnecessary, of course.  Just wow!

    The tale of Pecos Bill and Slue-Footed Sue just cries out for cartoons.  Had to look up what slue-footed means.  It means that a person's feet point outwards, the opposite of pidgeon-toed.

    For toon Bill and toon Sue, will use a method similar to making my toon horse for the precious challenge.  Here is my start on Bill.  I used the polyline tool to draw the rough outline of a thin toon male, hips slightly narrower than shoulders.  I filled the n-gon, and then divided it into quads.  In drawing the outline, I placed the points where it would be easy to turn to quads.  No hands yet because I want to model them looking down the Z axis and attach after the main body is finished.  No ears yet either.  This gave me my first WIP.

    I then added thickness and extruded once to get side edge (personal preference, not necessary).

    I then focused on the head with symmetry, roughing in circles for the eyes, and ovals for the nose and mouth.

    I then cleaned up the face a little bit, getting better edge loops for the face overall, and some of the major features.  One note - if you compare the two facial closeups, you will see that in my edit, I inverted the triangle below the oval for the mouth so that it now points up.  This is anticipating the chin.

    I pulled out some interior torso and facial points and check one level of smoothing for current status.

    As always, suggestions welcome.
