poser resource install help

Had been using Poser7 for years, added DS and just installed Poser10. In trying to install my content into Poser nothing will install properly. Ive tried the Daz installer twice with it set to the poser10 file as recommended...ive tried unzipping it which gives me errors, and Ive tried placing each file by itself and nothing will show up in Poser. Is there somewhere that shows the file structure in Poser10? Any ideas?
Thx

Where do you have your Poser format installed, and what Operating System?

That's the problem -- Windows 7/8/Vista protect the Program Files/Program Files (x86) hierarchies, so you should not install content there.

well thanks Microsoft...*smacks forehead*...as this is what it installed by default is there info somewhere on what to do? And will it then be able to unzip using paths or will I need to place all the files by hand?

I thought Poser since at least Poser 8 defaulted to Documents?

dunno about 8, this is 10 and on first install it mace two 'poser10' files under smithmicro...tried a different install option and it did just one poser10 folder. But the files from Daz in looking at the filepaths and nesting are including a 'content folder above the runtime, so I even tried creating that content folder and dragging the runtime and all its kids in there, no go. Ive tried everything I can think of.

When you install newer versions of Poser, SMS gives you an install screen that asks you where you wish to install content. There are at least 4 or 6 different choices. One of which is to do the traditional install to the runtime folder that resides in the main app folder. Other choices pretty much reflect the changes in the Windows OS.

It's best to install the content to the roaming app data folder or some other folder of your choice. While you can still install the main app to the x86 Program Files folder, it's not a wise idea with any OS over XP. Especially since some Python scripts still prefer to be installed to the main Python folder in the main app folder.

Roaming app data is usually found in documents and settings under my computer.

cool, thank you...the last install option put the content under docs and by hand installing each file it seems to be working. Going to take a month to get everything installed but at least its working. Thanks again everyone for the help

Did you use external runtimes or did you just install everything to one gigantic runtime inside P7?

You can leave P7 as is and just point your newer version of Poser at the old runtime. It would be harder to add to the old P7 runtime but you won't have to go through re installing all the products already there.

You can even copy the Runtime folder in P7 over to a new folder where you have the P10 content, rename it P7 content or something like it and point P10 at it.

If you still want to sort out your runtimes, you can do it while still having access to your currently installed content.

It's not default. Its an option that they suggest you use. There are several options for where you want your content installed to. Surprisingly they still offer the library within the program folder. I still use it there. I had to change permissions to the user accounts to get everything to work right but I don't suggest anyone do that. It can really mess up your system. The next time I have to reinstall I'm changing mine to the documents folder.

P7 had one huge runtime in the poser7 folder... was old enough to have content I no longer need so wanted a clean install

You might find it easier to create external runtimes. Separate out your content, figures, however you want it. You can add and remove runtimes from the Poser library anytime you want.

I have about 50 standing external runtimes along with various working and project runtimes.

You can still do a clean install but by copying or leaving the P7 runtime and pointing the P10 library, you still have access to all your content while you're cleaning up. Once you're done, you can always delete the old runtime. I archive older runtimes because you never know what will happen. I had archived my old P5 runtime only to need it when 3D Commune suddenly closed it's doors with no warning and no chance to download your order history.

If you have older freebies, especially from the old free archives here at DAZ and you still want them, make sure you have back ups. It's the only way you will keep them.

AppData is not meant for user data, it is as its name implies for data that apps need to write/store, that is why it is hidden by default. User/[user name]/Documents or User/Public/ Documents is the recommended locations for user data.

When SMS originally released the Debut version of Poser it defaulted to writing the installed content to the app data folder. They were supposed to fix it but I don't know if they ever bothered to. It was annoying as heck.

you can also use a tool called take ownership which will allow you to have more control over your files it works on vista and Windows 7 - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ (this does work on Windows 7 and 8 I have used it on both)

another way is to edit the permissions and add everyone.

if you want to use the traditional poser folder setup.
