Unless you "own the box" there isn't a lot you can do honestly. Maybe the Café should be taken out of DAZ's hands and placed fully under the control of the passionate community?
It's not in DAZ's hands at all. They donated some software last year. Other than that they have no involvement, really.

They may or may not pay something for the server, I'm actually not sure about that arrangement.

It's always been by and for the community. DAZ has been supportive but the only "imposition" they requested was that we spell their name correctly as DAZ 3D.

It's squarely up to the "passionate" community if it continues.

If anyone wants to get involved, PM me.

Agree. I am about to pull out all unessentials and basically start from scratch. Forums and groups are being removed by the end of the week and they probably won't be back. Other extras will also be removed. Items that were posted in the user freepository will be moved to downloads

Maybe the Gars Man could dig around in there? I would love to help, but that would only hinder, I'm sure :ahhh:

imho, being currently the one most familiar with the site, it needs to be pulled down and tooled from the ground up.... but it occurs to me that was what I kept telling you about dynamic hair. LOL!

It's not "offline" but there is now a curtain up and lot's of horrific noises and drilling sounds and some muffled crying....

I'll make the News available again as soon as I can get it out of surgery.

oh, and it would actually be helpful if anyone could say what they LIKED about Cafe, if anything. Those are things I could work towards restoring or rebuilding....

It is paying for the server and network pipe that is most important since it is not often that a community is willing to chip-in financially (at least not without a suitable ROI). I'd be interesting in learning a bit more about this side of the issue since it will determine where to start troubleshooting.

I will lay my cards on the table...I don't really go to the Café due to the performance issues. I like the idea of having an independent Carrara site though so I should poke around again.

Perhaps the Café already fits my requirements there. I mean that DAZ has no influence on it. If they own the server hardware directly or are paying for the hosting then the plug could be pulled at any time for any reason.

On the other hand, Aesop warned us what happens when trying to please everybody... ;-)

Or we could all be hit by a meteor tomorrow...

Some people wanted it to be a "spite site".... I don't think that's very helpful for Carrara users, although I got involved during a period when DAZ's forums were down and fluctuating. The forums were mostly trolled by people who aren't allowed to post here anymore. I am not interested in duplicating or providing "an alternate" to what's already out there. There's plenty of Carrara info that isn't represented here - and the advanced stuff sinks down into the unsearchable abyss. I get that everyone thinks it should be about more forums but meh. Forums are so '90s.

An earlier incarnation wanted Cafe to be a showcase for professional use of Carrara (archiviz, etc), especially since DAZ doesn't present to that market.... I just got tired of valuable Carrara knowledge being erased everytime DAZ had a forum redesign, such as the Carrara freepository.

    <<< SNIP >>>

I'm with you on those points Holly. I do want the ability to criticize DAZ if necessary without the censorship hammer of the Mods dropping (i.e. my post a few weeks ago where I called out DAZ as lying). But I hate it when legit criticism and surrounding discussion gets wiped out because of a handful of jack-holes who devolve it into bitter name-calling.

DAZ 3D moderation is done by a team, which, afaik, makes the DAZ 3D forums unique, because no action is taken without a quorum being present, and a majority vote taken for that action.

The DAZ 3D forum team does attempt to keep the forums civilised and polite. Criticism is not necessarily removed but accusations are. Unfounded speculation which is meant to be disruptive is also removed.

Our aim is to keep the forums so that they can be used by all members, both new and older members, without any of the members feeling that the forums are unfriendly.

Yeah, there's something about the nature of forums that can turn well-meaning conversations ugly... or people "hear" the opposite of what was just said and decide you are being sarcastic... People also have a bad day from time to time.... It's like the words can be right there, but a totally unintended meaning comes across...

There's also people who are just frustrated and spoiling for a fight. A small community can self-police, but not a large community that has a lot of new users.... You could say whatever you wanted about DAZ at Cafe, but the other members would reality-check you....

I really liked the activity wall at Cafe, it was like Facebook: post a picture or a youtube, make a comment..., Different from a forum... people can comment back or "like" it.... It seemed to encourage people to post images, although there weren't many options to filter or sort it.... Cafe's user galleries have always sucked. It seems galleries are either "easy to use" and therefore really limited (for sharing pics on a dating site), or gorgeous presentations that are cryptic to understand.

Meh, whatever. I'm only bringing it back in stages.... DAZ's forums are healthy now so people will just have to rant politely. LOL

    Thank you for choosing Bitdefender.

We have sent the data to our laboratories.
We'll analyze it and, if a false positive is found, detection will be removed in the next 72 business hours.

Thank you for reporting this! Please don't hesitate to contact us, should you need any assistance in the future.

    Have a wonderful day!

    @Erik Heyninck

you should be able to get onto carraracafe.com now without the warning.... I can.

Nice to see someone took the advise I posted, and low and behold, after they looked at the info they updated their files and the site is now listed as ok.........who would have thought eh, with so many other people here all using different programs telling others it was clean :)

Truly! Hey, thanks for bringing it up instead of... well... not bringing it up! :)

I could do without the forums. Even when my satellite bandwidth was at full capacity, the Cafe forums crawled. Then there's aforementioned jack-holes..... ;-)

I did really like the Freepository thing and would hope that can be continued.

I'm on the fence and on the verge of leaning away from the whole FB inspired wall thing. But then again, I loathe FB, so perhaps I'm a bit biased. ;-)

I do like the idea of galleries, but not the current iteration. Cryptic is right.

I also like the idea of a Showcase gallery where maybe users can submit images and votes can be awarded similar to how the old DAZ 3D galleries used to work. Those that garner the most votes are included in the gallery. That gives me an idea! Maybe the winners of these monthly challenges can have their images in a gallery to showcase them?

Thank you! It's good to hear what people think!

The site is totally borked at the moment, but the forums are still there in the same place running under a new theme... If anyone could let me know if this is a faster experience? It seems faster to me.... Of course the links and formatting are all ugly atm...

Much, Much faster for me ;) and I like how you've put Carrarators and the DAZ 3D forums links in the main menu bar. Speaking of which, I like the new theme. Thanks Holly. I know this isn't exactly how you wanted to spend your evening... so I thank you immensely for going above and beyond. I think that your optimizations will certainly help traffic.

I'm getting page loads in around 10 seconds, across the site right now. This is vastly different to my earlier experience. :-)
