Deforming Clothing Questions

Does anyone know if it is possible to deform clothing to be flattened or empty? I am trying to figure out a way to have a dress flat on a bed for instance, but I also need to be able to have the dress flowing naturally if it was being carried in a characters arms. Currently if I load up any clothing items, they have a predetermined conforming shape as if they are on an invisible person but this won't work for what I am needing to do.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Could make morphs using Hexagon.

I have never used Hexagon. Is it easy to load DAZ clothing and morph?

Yes ... it's great for morphing Daz content.
Send it over the bridge [under File > Send to Hexagon] to Hexagon.
Make the morph [do not change the number or welding of anything, just move stuff around - some of the brushes under the uvmap & painting tab work well enough. Select a brush, do a little work, validate. Select a brush do a little work, validate. IF something goes wrong, instead of validate, click abort and only a little work is lost.
In D/S with the recipient figure selected,
from Hexagon send the selected morphed item back over the bridge to D/S.
The create morph dialogue box will appear. Create the morph.
If it is a keeper, save the morph. File > save as > morph asset ....
There's a little more for the fine tuning but that's the abbreviated how to edition.
edit to add: Before 'saving the morph', dial it back to "0" so future loads of the item don't load with the morph dialed in ;-)
Try this use, the Z scale dial to mostly flatten the item and then use deformers to bend it and give some shaping to that. Works best for items without sleeves.
For that kind of stuff you really need a full dynamics/soft body physics implementation...so, when I need to do something like that, I export the item to Blender and run a cloth sim on it, there. Then import the finished 'drape' back into DS.
That image is almost exactly what I am trying to achieve. But I do not know how to use Blender.
So I have an older version of Hexagon. It is 2.5.1.79 32Bit for MAC. It looks like nothing for Hexagon will download in DIM for some reason and I can not find it in my Account but I have the original installer and serial from way back when. I don't see anything about Bridge in this version though.

No it won't work with the latest D/S4.x. I have no idea about which programs will or won't work on a MAC.
The latest edition of Hexagon [on Windows anyway] cannot be run on the same computer as the older one. The download would be for the one which should hook a bridge link between it and D/S4.x
Serial key should also be in your account.
For DIM downloads, there's possibly a check mark needed to get software to show?
Or via your Account, Product Library ... either the green link or the blue link for a manual download.
Hexagon doesn't support Mavericks (or Mountain Lion or anything after 10.6). The last update made it somewhat compatible but... it was a WHILE ago as that compatability should tell you. I have it installed on my machine, but I hardly ever use it because it suffers from chronic crashes. Glue your fingers to the save keys if you're using on Mac.
I've done this exact thing before. This being have a dress flat on a bed.
Step 1: Import clothing into the scene without fitting it to anything.
Step 2: Reduce it's Z-scale to ~10%
Step 3: Position it on the bed as you'd like (just because it's not parented to a figure doesn't mean it can't be posed. I usually just do a simple bend + side-side dial with the thighs of the dress to make it "drape" over the bed.
Step 4: Be sure that the geometry clips slightly through the bed.
Step 5: Apply a Smoothing Modifier to the dress (Scene tab -> Geometry -> Add Smoothing Modifier) <-- I think, I'm not at my machine with DS on it.<br /> Step 6: Select the bed as the Collision object. Step Collisions to 1 and Smoothing to 10ish. dial it as you wish to make it look nice.
Okay ... 'for better or worse' [hopefully not too many typos or mistakes] ... I put together this little tutorial covering a couple of ways for morphing items. The D-Former method does not appear to have to require Hexagon ... it used to in order to save it ... but this time the option to save was present on the tab.
Morphing Clothing not on Figures
I'd go with a Dynamic dress if you are using DazStudio. You'll get a very realistic look. You can buy one here or get a free one from http://www.optitex-dynamiccloth.com/
