i tried changing the tire tread shaders to glowy energy, but it look lame.
then i tried adding cones under the glowy tires to be thruster energy. looks lame.
maybe super hamsters would be the trick.
thanks. :)

I'd think removing the tires (opacity to 0, maybe) and replacing them with scifi type glowing greebles would be good. Think the prototype hover car from the Captain America movie a couple years back.
greeeeebles.
seeing a greeble plugin for Blender.
http://www.daz3d.com/yamaki-rapture - Shiny. can't think of what to do to make this flying. it's mostly tire.
Greebling or nurnies are used most often to generate large cityscapes or add complexity of the surface of a model. Prime example of greebling is the original Death Star attack scenes in the original Star Wars. Another is the Borg ships seen in Star Trek.
Possibly you could add one or more primitives, or some other simple object, smoothed, to cover the bottom portion of the car front-to-back to hide the fact that it has wheel wells completely, although it might be tricky to integrate with front and back bumpers or sharper curves. Use the same material as the car or something appropriate for a car bumper or bottom plastic/metal panel.
(But now that you brought it up, I totally want to see you render hamsters in place of wheels. :-)
Not a final product by any means, just a quick 30-second theory test of hover conversion. I took a sphere and squashed it and applied the car's material to the sphere (adjusted tiling and position slightly). One could do a better job of hiding the fenders, or adding extra detail with a few more primitives to blend them in, plus make it look less like a bumper car. Theoretically possible.
Ok, the paint job was apparently applied but drunk people, but just adding a few random items could disguise the wheel wells fairly well and add some sci-fi-ish-ness to the vehicle. Here I randomly choose a pair of pills, enlarged and placed on the front, and a pair of pencil sharpeners enlarged and placed along the back. You could select better items, but this hopefully illustrates that there is a lot of leeway in what you select.
Maybe slap some engine exhaust, perhaps a few small directional thrusters, or maybe just put glowing fog underneath it, or a line of antigravity-squished lawn trailing off in the direction in came from.
I really, really need sleep now.
puts on a fresh pot of coffee :)
