Decimator with G2F - 41K Poly Limit?

Hey all,

I just picked up Decimator and I feel like I'm already doing something wrong. :\

I was playing around with it to decimate the base genesis 2 female model. When I load up Decimator, though, it's trying to tell me that the total number of polys in the mesh is 41066. This seemed pretty low to me, but I went ahead and did a test to verify. When I exported a non-decimated G2F I got a mesh around 168K polys, versus the 41K polys for the exported Decimator LOD.

Can anyone shed some light on why I can't start with the full 168K poly version in Decimator and work down from there instead of being locked at 41K polys? Is there a simple setting somewhere that I'm missing? I tried all the things I considered obvious and didn't have any luck.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Kinglord :) Did you Select G2F Resolution 'Base' in the Paramters Tab and set Subdivision Levels to Zero? That might work but I haven't tried it myself.

Decimator doesn't take subdivision into account. Genesis 2 Female actually has around 20k quads in base resolution, so doubled up (because a quad is effectively 2 tris) and taking into account individual triangles, it makes sense.

Agreed on the base resolution, it doesn't look much different from the decimated version (although you can still see some slight differences) but I'm not sure why the High Resolution level also results in the same number of max decimated polys. Does Decimator only use the base resolution regardless of what you have selected? Is there any way to actually get a decimated version of the High Resolution?

What 'end result' are you trying to achieve with decimate?
