I need a screw

or a bolt
a threaded cylinder to be precise
while I am certain this can be done in the spline modeler
which is a complete mystery to me
I was trying a vertex cylinder with a displacement map using the caution lines operator
which I got to work beautifully as a diffuse channel creating an all around candy stripe with cylindrical mapping in shader room and planar uv mapping
but weird shapes in displacement with subdivision and a very low amplitude
applying it to displacement froze up carrara eventually and it will now not recover at all
for all I knew it worked but now I have lost all my project as it has gone white and alas beyond salvation

Your title will probably get a few people to check the thread!
I am learning the vertex modeller myself and know that somewhere in a training vid I saw something that would possibly help you, but I cannot recall where.
I did find this tool set on the store:
http://www.daz3d.com/tools-and-toolbox
About the crash... are you on Mac or PC? Can you quit and restart or doe stat crash as well? I ask this because I just had a serious crash that refused to be fixed...
I'm here for you Wendy :)
there was a Tut a long time ago, for making a screw-in light bulb, but I've no idea where that would be now.
What about trying the Interpolated Curve, to draw a curved and flexible shape (like the Vines in another thread)
then sweep that with a circle or a "D" shape, so the flat edge is against your cylinder.
It's not a great solution, but it's an option.
I've had a feature request since C7 for a Helix tool in the VM.
the spline modeller can do it,. easily,. then you could convert to Vertex modeller.
In the Spline Modeller:
Create a small oval,..
Go to the Geometry menu / Extrusion Preset / Spiral
set the number of turns and click ok, for a Basic Spiral "spring"
Hope it helps :)
I want to make my own model so nothing in store of any use
the freeze was a bad choice of leaving Auto update on in shader room
displace in 3D view and looking at result in assembly room is less freeze inclined
has not crashed just frozen unresponding whited out as I tried Esc to stop the auto update render
am giving it time in the hope I do not lose the rest of my model
which stupidly I did not save
thank you Andy
I will try that if my scene recovers
You can use Sparrowhawks spring plugin.
http://www.sparrowhawke3d.com/
I used it for the initial shape.
To get a full bolt or screw, some modelling are required.
First create the spring.
Convert to vertex object.
Untriangulate polygons.
Select the inside line, and delete.
Weld the object.
And crease the inner and outer shape of the screw part.
Add smoothing.
thanks to Andy I got what I was after but other ideas helpful too
I just wish my first instance of carrara could start responding again so I do not need to redo all my unsaved model which was going fine until I got to the screw
Coming back to post that Blender has a "screw tool" but it doesn't look that different than the Spline Modeler's spyral tool,
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Modeling/Meshes/Editing/Duplicating/Screw
and I thought of Sparrowhawke's Spring but Varsel was way more advanced.
you would all be horrified at what I am modelling
a choke pear
it is placed in the mouth of a blasphemer and the screw turned opening the leaves
well so claimed
I actually believe it is one of those fanciful torture devices like the iron maiden that were never actually used just created later by castle owners for their "collections" to add notoriety to their ancestors for tourist attraction
it supposedly had other points of insertion for homosexuals and abortion performing midwives.
That looks like a nice incline plane that is continuous like it should be. Thanks for showing.
Reminds me of this tutorial on Youtube, but yours is easier with that plug-in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ihO5yH7mCQ
ok finished but not working
running a physics sim the leaves fell off instead of swinging
only made leaves physics motion
as not expecting screw to work in thread though that would be nice
Probably too late, but there is a great tutorial at renderosity for making threads using the spline room for Carrara.
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/tutorial/?tutorial_id=2455
I made a very disturbing age restricted video
That's interesting - I'm trying to make a rope, which is probably not all that different...
HA! my daughter came in while I was watching the video and said, "DON'T BUY THAT MOM!" I think she was afraid I'd hunt a real one. lol. Yeah, I know nothing about modeling and the title still reeled me in. heh Great job by the way!
Ouchies! Yikes, Wendy... I'm glad I'm on your side! :ahhh:
Yeah... nice choke pear.
You know I'm not a blasphemer, right?
Oh my!
I put the Daz studio rigged .duf on sharecg if anyone interested
will not link as not family friendly
Thanks Wendy.
Say, did you end up using Sparrowhawkes spring primitive for that?
no just Andy's suggestion in spline modeler
took a few tries but got there
Looks good Wendy :)
glad it worked well for you,. but slightly embarrassed that I forgot about Sparrowhawkes Spring ....Doh
:)
Have you seen the video? :ahhh:
Kidding!
It did turn out great, Wendy! Get it... 'turned out' great? :bug:
I always expect the Spanish inquisition :)
Interesting clips Wendy,.
I thought I knew a lot about history, especially that era, but that's an intricate contraption I'd never heard of.
I saw it on the TV program Bones and roughly based mine on this wikipedia image
I must admit I half expected it to go somewhere else -- the medievals were not noted for being fussy about which holes their torture devices went into!
