Migrating Poser

I want to install Poser on my new computer, I had Windows XP and the new one is Win7. The new computer has a SSD drive so I don't want to fill it with all my content. Can I install the basic Poser in the C: drive and content on my big D: drive? I have backed up my Runtime folder and I still have Poser installed on my XP computer; just thinking about re installing everything gives me a headache, can I just copy the runtime folder after I have installed Poser on my new computer? I have read about the topic at the knowledge base but it is a little confusing.

Thanks!

I actually have my Poser program installed on my D drive and all my runtimes on my F drive (external), so when I migrated to a new computer I didn't need to install any runtimes, merely link to them.

Yes you can and should install the content to a different location. The new version of Poser actually recommends this. I have multiple runtimes all spread over two or more drives. You will have to add the runtime manually the Poser content pane, but it should work fine.

The only issue you might have is some of the older content scenes might ask you to locate some textures. Once the scene is saved it will remember the new paths.

THanks guys!Ok so I take my Poser cd installation and install as ausual, does the cd gives me the option to install content somewhere else other than my C: drive. I have a 128 gig SSD drive as my C: drive and 3 TB D: drive as my Content drive. Should I just install the whole thing in my D: drive and nothing on My C:drive. I was reading that is best to separate Runtimes installed via DIM from Runtimes installed manually or via Bitrock. DAZ suggested this. "

You can move the Runtime folder to your new computer, then add the Runtime in Poser by pressing the 'add runtime' button and navigating to the folder that encloses the Runtime folder (not the Runtime folder itself).

If you have been storing your content in the Program Files directory (which was the default/standard in the past) you'll need to find a new location because Windows 7 considers the Program Files directory a specially protected location and items installed to there will often not work correctly."

So I am sorry but I am a bit confused. I have the cd installation, I will install Poser 8 in my C:drive with the basic libraries, during the installation can I direct Poser 8 to install content to my D:drive? And then after that, copy the Runtime folder to my new computer and then press " add runtime" to add all the other stuff I bought? Or just install Poser 8 on my D:drive and then copy the Runtime folder to the same location and use the "add runtime" within Poser 8.

    Thanks!!!

Yes it gives you several option as to where to install content. If you pick the location during install then you don't need to add the runtime. If you move the runtime after install then you need to add it to Poser.

Adding to what Frank0314 said. I am not sure about Poser 8, it's been a while since I installed that version. If I remember right the most recent Poser versions will recommend that the runtime be installed in the public folder, but you want to choose the next choice; I think it's different hard drive.

As for the Poser program, I would install it directly on to the SSD, and the content on another disk (D Drive). If for some reason the content is installed on the SSD along with the program, then you can move the content to the D: Drive and manually add the new runtime location in Poser. I imagine you would want the Poser program to take advantage of the SSD speed.

Yes on this part and Poser's stuff will not be hogging space on you poor little SSD.

Thank you guys! Now I have been told that Poser 8 has issues with Internet Explorer 11!! I have to research that now!
