Genesis Male model? M4, M5 .... Confused!
Hey everyone, I'm new to all this and I'm confused as hell about the different male models.
I have, obviously, the base Genesis Male model .. apparently also Genesis 2 .. though I'm not sure what the difference is between them. They come with a limited amount of stuff .. no genitals of course.
So .. I've been looking to buy the Genesis 2 male gens. .. can I find it?? :P Not for lack of trying. Anyways, as I understand it the Genesis 2 Male gens may be in a "Genesis 2 Male Pro" package ... again I can find that!
And then we have M4, M5, and etc. And variety's thereof .. Yet I see a lot of stuff that says M4 for Genesis?? Aren't they different models. It's really confusing the sh*t out of me. I just want to get some full male models to use and I think I should get the full genesis model as some people have said it's versatile ... though I'll have to take their word for it. I don't understand why DAZ doesn't include the whole package of Genesis .. I mean .. it's pretty much all there anyways, so why not the gens?
I'm looking into some demon mods for Genesis but I feel a bit unsure as to what I'm buying for.
Also, I recently tried to install stuff into DAZ, actual DAZ content, not poser runtime libraries .. it was a nightmare .. how are you meant to actually install stuff using Mac OS X. Cos the route I took .. manually putting things into folders until I found something popping up in the library took forever. There's like 3 locations on the Mac Hard drive where DAZ stores stuff!
Can anyone help unravel some of this icky mystery stuff please??
Many thanks

The genitals are included with most of the Pro character sets - Michael 5 for Genesis, Michael 6 for Genesis 2 Male, I can't recall which if any of the others have the genitals (certainly not the teens).
Products may support both the older figure (Michael 4) and Genesis in the case of characters as Genesis can use the older textures, so all that's needed is a native morph for each. Sometimes the Michael 4 Shape for Genesis may be required (if the morph has been converted using GenX then the base M4 shape is needed to give the same final shape).
Using the DAZ Install Manager will help greatly with content installation, especially on a Mac where merging folders can be tricky, though you need to be careful not to end up with two copies of items.
Going a bit cross eyed reading your post :P .. but thanks for the explanation. So I need to look at buying M4 base model.
Also one more thing .. when I was playing with DAZ a few weeks ago I found some way to do a kind of morph on the Genesis model to make him look more muscled .. but I can't seem to find those controls now. I think it was listed under Basic Child .. Basic Bodybuilder etc. I haven't installed anything that should do this so I'm pretty sure it came with DAZ .. anyone know where I should look for these controls?
Thank again
Ahhhhh ... Figured something out .. the Genesis male model has the bodybuilder slider setting .. the Genesis 2 male does not .. guess that's what you get for the freebie version eh!
Well at least that mystery is solved. Anyways, yep, looks like I'll have top go invest in some models. Is their any particular reason to buy the "Pro" versions? .. I don't really want to spend $200 on something I won't use that much of .. I've been getting fine results just from the cheap demo base Genesis model? But if I get the base Model of Genesis, or M4 .. assuming they're not the same thing :P .. will that allow morphing for muscles etc?
Generation 4 figures consist of 3 base models: V4, M4 and K4. These models are legacy rigged in the original Poser manner and can be used in any version of DS and Poser 5 and up thought P6 is recommended. All other Generation 4 characters are morph sets for one of the 3 base models. M4 genitals required the purchase of Morphs++ package. DAZ stopped providing the gens as part of base after M3.
Genesis is the model originally included in DS4. It is weight mapped rather than rigged in previous Poser rigging. The base Genesis model is androgynous and can go from male to female to child. There are also a wide range of creature and other morphs for the Genesis figure. By default, Genesis uses the V4 uv. All other Generation 5 characters are morphs for Genesis. This included V5 and M5.
The various characters also come with their own uv sets. Genitals for Genesis are sold either in the Pro bundles or in V5/M5 Combo bundle.
Genesis 2 Female/Male returns to gender split that DAZ had prior to Genesis. There are many long thread debating the good and bad points of this. The base G2F and G2M are included in DS4.6 so you don't have to buy the base. G2F uses the V5 mapping by default and G2M uses the M5 uv by default. Both and other character sets have their own uvs as well. Female characters are morphs sets for the G2F and males are for the G2M. There is no combo bundle with Generation 6 so you have to buy at least 2 adult Pro bundles to get the male and female gens.
There's a whole lot more that's a short, short version of Gen to G2F/M.
Ah, I see.
So, Basically I have Genesis 1 and 2 .. there's nothing else to buy there .. no pro version .. nothing I'm missing?
From now I just go and buy the models I want .. and for some reason one needs Genesis 1 and 2 installed to use most of them?! That's fine ..I just wanna make sure I'm not missing anything really essential.
No, not exactly true. Genesis and G2F/M bases are just that. They have some basic expression morphs but that's it. Genesis has the Evolution morph bundle which has head and body morphs for Genesis. There are also expression morphs and muscularity morphs.
Many characters (especially those in the Pro bundles for V5 and M5) require the Evolution head and body morphs to use the character morphs.
G2F has the Genesis2 Female(s) head and body morphs. G2M has them for the male. Again, if you want more than basic expressions and want to use some of the characters, you would need to by the head and body morphs for both figures. You can by for each gender either singly or in bundles.
DS4.x Pro also comes with auto fit. This allows you to fit Generation 4 clothing to Genesis. I believe you can also fit to G2F/M with auto fit but many have stated you get a better fit if you go from Gen4 to Genesis and then to G2F/M line.
If you can swing the price tag, I would suggest buying this for Genesis if you want the basic morphs and gens for the male

The V5 Pro suite is also in Fast Grab if you need the female gens for Genesis. You will end up with some overlap of product if you buy both but since you seem to be mainly interested in the male, take a look at the M5.
Yes - for the new models (any character with a 5 or 6 after his or her name, plus Hitomi), you need Genesis or Genesis 2 installed.
Any model with a 4 after his or her name requires Michael 4 (for the males) or Victoria 4 (for the females) - the only exception to this is The Kids 4.
Any model with a 3 after his or her name is a stand-alone figure - no other purchase required.
.
Oh, yes - here's a money-saving tip if you intend to buy a Pro bundle. Get a Platinum Club membership first. (For example, the Michael 6 Pro Bundle has a regular price of $124.95, and a Platinum Club price of $87.46. A Platinum Club Quarterly Membership costs $24. Save $13.49 by buying the membership, and get all the other membership benefits as a bonus.)
Scott, look at Genesis, G2F and G2M as figures and think of everything else as a shape or character.
Genesis is unisex and all of the characters labeled with a 5 are for use with it - Victoria 5, Michael 5, etc. If you want your figure to have genitals, you need to buy the Pro Pack for Michael 5 (or Victoria 5 for her gens.)
G2F and G2M use all of the characters labeled with a 6 and the same rules apply - you need the M6 and V6 pro packs for the male or female genitals.
Genesis will accept any skin textures that were made for Michael 4 or Victoria 4.
To customize the shapes of Genesis, G2M or G2F beyond what is included, you need to buy the morph sets that are sold separately.
You can also buy what are referred to as Legacy Shapes. They are the previous model's body shapes. What that will do is allow you to conform clothing meant for that model to Genesis, G2M or G2F.
