Strange effects on sss-skin with small renders / figures
I got the feeling there have been more posts about this, but I can't find them.....
See the attached image, the larger render and the smaller render are done with the exact same (camera-) settings, only the small is rendered at 320x640, the larger at 640x1280. rendered is DS 4.6.2.118 Pro 64 bit
Notice the artifacts on the skin (V6 Belle with SSS at 75%) in the small image? It gets less (visible) in larger dimension or close up renders; got no clue what exactly causes this. I've tried adjusting just about anything I can think of from samples and filter settings in the render-settings, adjusting the shader(textures) settings, editing the settings on the lights itself, but I cannot get rid of it. It happens with a simple diffuse light or a complex UE2 light setup or with the Advanced spot/ambient etc lights, and even without any lights added, as is the case with the posted image. It does not happen with all SSS skins, and on some the effect is even worse (and the effect is not visible with SSS turned off).
I've compared texture/shader settigns between 'skin' that works and 'skin' that won't until my eyes got sore........ nothing found that can explain it
So most likely by now I am missing the obvious.... anyone any ideas how to fix this (besides rendering at extreme large dimensions)?

I'll assume for this reply that you're using AgeOfArmour's Subsurface shader. If not, ignore my pearls of wisdom.
There's a setting in the shader called "Shading Rate". It defaults to 8. A lower setting of 2 should fix most problems. For very small renders, I sometimes use 1.
You should use the same value for all the skin surfaces.
THANK YOU, that did the trick
(now I was convinced I did change that setting as well in one of my tries, but apparently not :red:
And, well, it does expalin why the V6-Belle skin settings did look a little better compared with other skins, as it had it shading rate set to 6...)
