XprssnMagic Users: Updates + now DAZ Studio [Commercial]

edited June 2014 in The Commons

Update: Sorry they took so long to join the Countdown sale, but all five new XprssnMagics are up today.

Thanks for your interest! Elisa / gryffnn

Original post:
If you own any gryffnn products, be sure to go to your Product Library page and download the new updated files.

All my existing products have been updated with three versions: Win, Mac and Shockwave, and new user guides. They are now compatible with DAZ Studio 4.6 via the included XprssnMagic Importer script* (except V4A4HipHopMagic, which is Poser-only).
* thanks to Richard Hazeltine, who updated the old script.

Also, new XprssnMagics will be out soon for:
Genesis Female - Victoria 5
Genesis Male - Michael 5
G2 Female - Victoria 6
G2 Male - Michael 6

New customers may want to wait a bit - my entire store will be on sale once these new products go live.
(note that the Generation 3 XprssnMagics probably will be retired soon.)

Thanks for your support - Elisa / gryffnn

Yes, the updates showed up in my DIM yesterday.

Wow, that goes back. Not even sure where I archived the original files - although I did come across the P4FemMagic files not long ago for good old Posette!

Not promising anything, but I'll look around this weekend. Are you PC or Mac?

...does this include Sadie XprssnMagic and Aiko3 XprssnMagic?

  • edited December 1969

I just tested the upgrades to MacOSX I did a good while ago for the Generation 2 XprssnMagics - yup, still run in 10.5.8, but not in 10.7.3. If I recall correctly the OS stopped supporting classic apps about them. Looked on hard drives for the original working files, but they must be on DVD somewhere.

Do V2, M2 or the first Stephanie's XprssnMagic show up on the Product Library list in your Accounts (probably labeled Inactive)? If not, then I wouldn't be able to add new files. They don't show up on mine, although the figures and things from that era do.

Yes, everything in my store will be in the sale, including V4FaceMagic. I'll let you know when Marketing has it set up.

I did like Aiko 3's more extreme expression morphs. SadieXprssnMagic is for 3DUniverse's Toon Girl Sadie, not the Genesis refit.

SadieX is the only update that has content change (other than all the user guides). At some point 3DU added frown morphs, so SadieX now uses them and I removed my custom morphs. Also, he released Toon Boy Sam and the SadieX works for him too.

I don't often do cute, but had a lot of fun with Sadie. Great clothes and hair for her, a toon treehouse - even a texture by Morris! Used to be a sweet pack for her in the store called Jazz, with roller skates and corkscrew pigtails, that I animated for a project.

I'll be darned, I saw the Update let it run and never looked. I love Expression Magic. Thank you both so much for the Update I can go have some free form face fun again.

Success! I've located all my original files and doing updated versions of the Generation 2 figures, plus Hiro4X, which isn't in my store anymore. Will ask if they can be put in the product libraries, but don't know how long it will take.

Thanks for the kind words - it's always nice to hear that folks get use from my products!

Hi -- XprssnMagic for G2F looks promising, but I would just like an explicit clarification. Under What's Included, it says "Requires only the Genesis 2 Female(s) expression morphs." Does this mean the expression morphs like Surprised, Happy, SnarlLeft and Afraid that come with the G2F base figure? Thanks.

Yeah I was wondering the same about the G2M version - I can't find the specific G2M Expression Morphs, but I'm fairly sure I have what is needed, but I'd like to be sure I have what's needed before buying.

  • edited December 1969

Only the expression morphs that come with the basic figure - Genesis Female, Victoria 6, etc. - are needed.

XpressnMagics only use those morphs that are specific to either the eyes or the mouth (BrowDown, MouthOpen), so that you can combine any of the eye xprssns with any of the mouth xprssns without one part changing the other.

The full-face expression morphs for each figure (Angry, Happy) are automatically set to zero, so they don't change the look of your chosen xprssn combo.

Does that answer your questions? - Elisa

I'm sorry, I'm kind of a `nub' here when it comes to XprssnMagic... What is the point of this utility, exactly...? I mean, what's the difference in using this, or just clicking the dials and seeing the result on your figure the `usual' way? I guess I'm just not understanding the point of this...
    thx

To create expresions in a MIX way. Example you can load one Eye setting and then TEST every mouth setting till you find one that you like. Or the other way also. It gives more options than most expression content packages. If your a hand dial everything type then it may not be the tool for you. Also it does include some settings the Base expression morphs may not be able to match out of the box.

Thanks, Jaderail, that's a good explanation.

I started this years ago as a way to save, preview and quickly apply morph settings for my own work, without scrolling through a lot of library poses.

I programmed a free-standing application in the original Macromedia Director to hold preview images and dial settings for the Poser 4 Female (Posette), then cleaned it up for sale. With newer figures I added bells and whistles, like a toggle button to compare with the neutral face, and a side view.

You can create any of the xprssns yourself, if you're willing to spend the time. XprssnMagics just organizes them and lets you preview and compare a lot of combinations quickly. I do try to squeeze out as much variety as each figure allows - some are more of a challenge than others.

It's a practical tool, but hopefully also can sometimes provide inspiration for projects.

Thanks for your interest - Elisa/gryffnn

Your more than welcome Expression Magic for V4 was one of my first tools I bought for DAZ Studio 3. I'm very happy to see them in DS4.5+ now.

    Hi gryffnn / Elisa Griffin,

I tried Michael3XprssnMagic but I unfortunately get an error message in DAZ:

"Bailing out in line/morph 54: Unrecognized morph format line:
    Head 0 Mouth F! Linear 0.0000

To be more specific, I see that the expressions are working but I get this message box abd when I clixk on the box (Close or cancel) the expression disappears.

Your program is working well with Genesis/Genesis2 Male/Female. V4/M4 seem to work too. I don't have V3 so I couldn't test her. I tried your M3 expressions in Poser and they are working well too. But I really like to be able to use your M3 expressions in DAZ studio.

By the way, thank you so much for making these expressions.

    Best regards.

Oh, wow, I had forgotten about that quirk with Michael 3. I had fixed it, but it must have somehow crept back in when I updated all my old products recently.

The problem is that M3 has a dial Mouth F! Poser doesn't care, but that exclamation mark makes the DAZ Studio XprssnMagic Importer script go all sideways, triggering that error message.

The solution is to paste the M3XprssnMagic output into the script text box as usual and simply delete the last line, and click the Apply button.

I think there are only two mouth xprssns that have settings for that morph dial, and their values are small enough to not really be missed. But the morph appears with all the other xprssns, too, set to zero.

Sorry for the extra step. Let me know if this doesn't solve the problem for you. Best - Elisa/gryffnn

    FIXED!!!

You're absolutely right. It works when I delete the last line. Thank you so much. I will now buy your V3 Expressions.

Thank you very much for your rapid answer.

    Best regards.

My entire store was on sale with Countdown 2 Summer punch points, but only for two days when my new products were introduced and then again during the catch up, which I think was also two days. The last discount sale I see is 6/14.

Don't know what the upcoming sale themes will be - I haven't done an Aiko 6 product, so not involved in the current one. Everything does go on sale - eventually. ;-)

I did locate the original Sydney and Jessi files, but haven't had time to update them yet. And have to see how to do it at that store.

Still seeing if DAZ can post the updated Generation 2 and Hiro4 XprssnMagics in customers' Product Libraries. Will post if they do.

Thanks again for your interest! Elisa /gryffnn

    Thanks for letting me know!

I just checked and any previous purchasers of these should find the updates in their Account / Product Library:
    Victoria2XprssnMagic
    Michael2XprssnMagic
StephanieXprssnMagic (the first Stephanie figure, not Stephanie 3)
    Hiro4XprssnMagic

Also the updated XprssnMagic Importer 4 DAZ Studio script (rewritten by Richard Hazeltine). The original DAZ Studio 2 script or the updated DAZ Studio 3 script will not work.

The DAZ Content QA Manager tells me he also updated the relevant installers from them so that DIM wouldn't throw an error about not being able to find the install directory since they install like 'software' in that they get their own install path rather than one of the standard ones.

I think it's great that DAZ supports even old products like these - Elisa/gryffnn

In Mac OS 10.8.5 only one of the three XprssnMagic apps I have will appear in Launchpad at once. The newest added app to the application folder will replace the previous one. They all launch and function from the application folder, but only one at a time will appear in Launchpad.
