Installing & Organizing contents in Daz 4.6
Hi guys,
I’m new to Daz, and just tried to install a few things such as poser’s Victoria 4, Victoria 4.2, but it seems like the contents are not very organized when they’re installed.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance on how to install/organize my contents in a more efficient manner?
For example, for these poser contents, they’re installed via the .exe file. and i just chose C:\user\public\documents\My daz 3d library as the install path… for some freebie downloads that i’ve found sometimes these contents are not in a install file but in a Runtime folder… and for those i just put them in the corresponding sub folders inside runtime folders as i’m instructed ... for example, the Pose folder, textures folder inside Runtime…. but why is skin textures put in Pose? shouldn’t it be in materials or something?
In addition, some of the clothes, hair for victoria when i installed to the My daz 3d library install path, they showed up under Poser Format -> figures area… shouldn’t they be in hair and props perhaps?
Is there a better way to make my install more organized? and under the right category inside daz3d?
like maybe have all the clothes, hair, skin textures, pose for victoria 4 in their own sub folders inside victoria4 folder? and all the contents (hair, clothes, skin, pose) for victoria 4.2 as their own sub folder inside victoria 4.2 ?
I’m sorry for such a noob question, but installing things to my daz 3d library folder just makes things appear so messy in daz3d.

I don't know how many times I've cussed at the same thing. Shouldn't hair and the colors for it be in the same place, instead of two completely different directory trees.
Thing is, that is how the creator of the stuff laid out the paths, and the add-on stuff will expect that stuff to be in those directories.
And to make it worse, some of the stuff has config-like files, with a line stating, I am here in this directory, and this is my file-name. If that line dose not match reality, the stuff wont work.
Unfortunately, most of the the pre-Genesis material is set up to comply with the old Poser standard which even Poser doesn't require any more.
Your not alone friend, content everywhere, other then where we expect. But if you'd like to organize your own content. Tutorial here, have fun :-)

I've been discussing this very thing (and how-to) on my Art Studio thread. Have many other posts about it, but take a peek at this one. I tell you how to do it. :)

The first thread (set up about a year and a half ago, now on thread 4) covers a lot of things for newbies, and I organized it and the following threads into a handy reference section. There's a section on customizing content.

Wow. I really need to update that! .... One day. LOL.
The basics are still the same tho - it was written in 2008 so it was before Genesis, and it was before DAZ started naming DS mats files the same as the poser ones, so you could have the DS mats WITH the poser mats. :D
I was also told a while back that LATER versions of Poser will handle those folders being moved? Don't know how correct that is, as I don't use Poser. :D

Yes, Poser 8 and up allow files to be in the "wrong" library.
