I'm getting the following error when rendering images with custom shadermixer bricks... (DS 4.5.1.6
Including Zigraphix's tiler brick:
3Delight message #43 (Severity 1): R2001: object '' (displacement 'brickyard/{7f6a8a01-fcbb-4b14-87e1-e6c19fdb63fd}/shader_Displacement', surface 'brickyard/{7f6a8a01-fcbb-4b14-87e1-e6c19fdb63fd}/shader_Surface') exceeded its displacement bound by 0% Despite the error, displacement varies by shader, from mild, to severe negative displacement, to severe. This results in the object being bigger/bloated or skinny. This is without any lights. DS Default, Omnifreaker, and AOA shaders are not affected, but all of mine, Tofusan's Simple SSS, and Zigraphix's tiler are.
Deleting the displacement image map in the shadermixer fixes this, but that's not what I want.
I also noticed this in my helpfile:

I got this with the DAZ Brick shader, which looks too displaced now:
3Delight message #43 (Severity 1): R2001: object '' (displacement 'brickyard/{c0d07076-ddf8-4894-af2d-431fb6fff231}/shader_Displacement', surface 'brickyard/{c0d07076-ddf8-4894-af2d-431fb6fff231}/shader_Surface') exceeded its displacement bound by 23%
Actually, DZ Brick looks really weird-- the brick colors exceed/stretch between bricks and the thing is tiled to an insane degree.
Comments
Oh, forgot to mention: I already closed and restarted DAZ, and it didn't help.
I also found this error when rendering Tofusan's Simple SSS, though this might be normal as some of his shaders do have bugs in them.

R2001 object 'rim' (displacement 'shader', surface 'shader') exceeded its displacement bound by dispbound%
A displacement bounds is be specified for the object but is not big enough. This could cut off displaced parts of the object. Maybe the bounds should be enlarged.
And you don't feed the bricks correctly.

It wasn't a problem last winter when I was working on a clay-edgeblend shadermixer. Plus, why in the world would both DAZ and Zigraphix distribute broken (albeit free) shadermixers? (the brick and tiler bricks respectively. Especially when the DAZ default brick worked properly for me not that long ago.
So how do I fix this? Why aren't Zigraphix's tiler, Daz's Brick and Blue Marble, and any custom shadermixer I make not work?
Are you still using the same version of DS you used last winter?
If you updated to a newer version check to see if there have been any changes to shadermixer or if DAZ updated to newer version of 3Delight.
Also check to see if there was any change to the actual sdk in updates of DS.
You might want to let Ziggraphix know that the tiler is not working whatever version of DS you are using. If something has changed, the creator may need to redo it.
The displacement warning isn't an error - it's telling you the bound is set too large, rather than too small, and so if you are optimising for speed (as a film-maker would be) you might wasn't to reduce the bounds so 3Delight isn't checking things it could skip. It's only if it exceeds by a positive value that you need to worry as you may get clipping, with some of the more extreme areas of displacement not rendering.
There have been some errors relating to normals in recent builds of DS - I think I saw a fix in the change log for the new Public Beta. I'm not clear that they were serious errors leading to malfunction, though.
Are you still using the same version of DS you used last winter?
I have never used any other version.
There is NOTHING wrong with ZIgraphix's mixer, or the DAZ Brick shader, something is wrong with my program, because it wasn't doing this just a few months ago. So what is wrong? And I am sure as hell NOT USING 4.6 + EVER, UNLESS BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY IS RESTORED 100%.
SO how do I fix this for 4.5.1.6? I know it can be fixed because it wasn't this way just a few months ago, so how do I fix it? What is going wrong?
So no one can help me at this point? That's incredibly disappointing, I'll never be able to upload or complete any of my DAZ mats for Poser products... It also greatly reduces DAZ's usefulness to me....
The attached pic shows the Genesis 2_SkinTorso material zone (Basic Female UV), that black square border around it shows the edge of the UV coordinates. Now when you apply an image map or shadermixer pattern brick, it get's applied to the entire area inside that black border, with visual maps like Diffuse this doesn't cause 3Delight or any other render engine an issue, but with maps that "move" the mesh it does cause an issue if the maps aren't made correctly.
A simple example of this are vein maps, they are basically black textures with a few light gray squiggles on them, as far as 3Delight is concerned the black not only means negative displacement on the mesh, but also across the entire UV region of that material zone, and because the map is trying to displace beyond the boundary of the mesh 3Delight coughs up a displacement bound error.
Now as to why the default surface shader, USS and AoA's shaders don't create these errors, they do it's just the devs have been able to block them from getting into the log, the shadermixer .sdl files are obviously a lot harder to block otherwise they would have done them too.
^^The issue is not the UV map, because this problem occurs no matter what model I use, including Genesis 1, a created primitive sphere, and various commercial jewelry items. Also, when I say that the default, AOA, and omnifreaker shjaders don't have this problem, I m not just talking about the error log-- they don't have this problem in renders, either-- they look normal.
This problem occurs, BTW, even if I have no displacement map/displacement set to zero.
UPDATE: Something weird. In ALL shadermixers where this problem occurs (basically, anything with a displacement node, esp. if it has been imported from scene in Shadermixer), this problem-- AND ERROR-- only occurs if there is nothing in the displacement map.
However, if I adjust the min-max to .010 or even 0, the displacement problem disappears.
Also, it seems that the helplog doesn't always mention the error even when the displacement problem is present. Again, this problem is not present in renders using the DAZ Default, Omnifreaker, or AOA shaders.
So, anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here? I think, also, possibly (I haven't checked) but it might affect AoA's SSS shader as well if I import it into Shadermixer then apply it back to a surface, like what happens with the default shader.
As I said, this used to not happen, and just for final confirmation, can anyone with the same version of DAZ please do a test to make sure?
You have to apply texture maps to every surface in the default, then import from scene in Shadermixer, remove all the texture maps, and then apply it back to the surface in order to run the proper test. Let me know what you find (I'm sure you won't get the distortion problem, but we'll see)
Could someone please run the test I requested in my previous post?
Can anyone with DAZ 4.5.1.6 please do the following and report back to me?
You have to apply texture maps to every surface in the default shader (the one you get when you create a primitive or load any figure without textures already applied), then import from scene in Shadermixer, remove all the texture maps, and then re-apply it back to the surface-- it needs to be one with multiple mat-zones in order to tell if you have this same displacement problem or not.
I can't run the test for you as I'm running a version of DS 4.6. Not the current public release but the one before it.
Have you checked with AOA? He may have issued an update to the SSS base that could cause issue.
I'm sorry I'm not much help. Most of my experience has been with Poser which doesn't handle procedural materials in the same way.
I'm certain that the issue here is with Shadermixer, and not those individual shaders. This problem occurs with any shader that I import into shadermixer then reapply to a surface, whereas ones that I load from my content library or runtime do not have this problem.
Surely I'm not the only one who still uses 4.5, am I?
It'd say the majority of users are using a version of 4.6. I used 4.5 well into the 4.6 update because the version I was using was stable and gave me no issues. I only updated because a couple of products I wanted use would not work in 4.5. Because of some of the marked differences in 4.5 and 4.6, it would have been nice if it were possible to keep both 4.5 and 4.6 on the same system. But I suppose that's just me. After all, I have all versions of Poser from P5 on up (only because P4/PPP has issues with Win7) and DS1 on up.
Do you use the DIM to install content or do you do it manually?
Have tried backing up everything, uninstalling the version of DS you are using, running an app like CCleaner to clean up after the uninstall and then doing a clean installation? If the issue is shadermixer itself, I don't know of any other way to fix it. I don't think DS installers have repair functions as part of their install/uninstall options.
I recently met displacement problems, developing a 3 different displacement + 1 adjustable normal + 1 bump brick for one single mat.
It took me a while to understand. I never had the error message, but I had the large offsets.
There is several things involved if I remember well. I cannot tell you it will solve your problem, but it helped me for my very similar one.
1. First the displaced point out of the DSdefaultdisplacementbrick of your displacement must be connected both to the last displacement brick (the one of the render), AND the one of the "DS default displacement" bump (even if you have no bump, add a bump entry, even empty), and this bump brick will send its N output to the final N input. If you only connect P of DSDefaultdisplacement to P of final displacement, the problem you mention is automatic.
2. Then save your shader,
3. go to edit the duf, go to your displacement brick and say : "needsmap : true" for this one.
4. Then reapply the shader somewhere in your scene, and resend it to the mixer.
5. reapply somewhere in your scene, resave as duf shader.
6. watch the duf. Normally at the end in the channels of your duf at the end you should have an "invalid without map : true".
and it solved this for me ONLY when I had only one layer of displacement (instead of my 3), and by adding the fact that I HAD to put a min and a max inverse from each other : min= - max.
7. Now the last step is (for me) : if no map, displacement strength must be set at 0. So if you have a map, steps 1 to 6 MAY help you. If you have no map, set displacement strength at 0.
I don't know if it will work for you, but let me know if you find any other solution, I struggled HOURS because of this!!!
Ho, I edit : and for VERY large displacements, the offset at the uv seams becomes sometimes visible, and depends on camera angles to.
I was able to fix an issue I was having by making sure that, if there wasn't meant to be a map, I was sending the displacement neutral colour instead - that is, -Min/(Max-Min) with a check for Min = Max to avoid division by zero. I wasn't however always including the bump, which may well explain why I was getting inconsistent results initially (over several days0. I do think this is related to the issue with the AoA SSSS Shader needing to a map or the bounds zeroed.
Very smart (as usually) Richard!
I have two questions :
1. do you use a script to do this or just the shader mixer?
2. Is it possible to include some script like dse script in the .duf shader files?
Actually I have a third question :
3. Is the language the same in dse and in duf? (I'm unable to edit any dse)
This thing is : If I just want to add in one of my shader the fact that if displacement map is empty, then displacement strength is zero, is it possible to write it somehow in the duf file only? (OK you are going to tell this is 4 questions.. right!)
This was just in Shader Mixer - what I did lacked elegance, but I had the image map (for the map, if any) and a set of bricks for the Min/Max values that then calculated the neutral value. Then I fed the neutral value into the Base and the map into the Layer input of a Mix brick and used the Alpha value as Displacement Strength. The Strength in the actual Displacement brick was set to 100 and hidden, the values of Min and Max were set from the separate value bricks. It seemed to work OK.
.dse is an encrypted script - it can't be decrypted (well, I imagine the devs could since they have the DS code, which obviously can read it, but for the rest of us it's a black box). .duf is DSON data. A .duf file can trigger a script - Rob has been discussing this in Developer Discussion recently.
I just saw this. I'm on 4.6, so I can't check by your version, but I just used the tiler that comes with my tutorial recently and had no problems.
Could you post an example of a render that shows the problem, and a screenshot of the surface settings on the shader?
Understood for the mixer! Well, my final solution is more "barbarian" : I write in the label of the map strength "Displacement strength :set to 0 if no map!"... I'm not proud of it, but now that I made more than 50 shader presets with this way, I do not really feel like changing my bricks.
Calling a dse via a duf is an elegant way to solve problems.
I feel I need to acquire this competency to script a few "simple" things, because I'm often stuck by things which could be solved in a few lines of codes. I think I may have a look in the Developer Discussion to have a better idea of "what can do what"... And also to see what Rob said.
Calling a dse via a duf? Could you explain what this means? (I know what the file types are, I just don't know what "calling a ___ via a ___" means) Does this fix the displacement problem?
Well I've never tried to do that, but it seems that in a duf file, but from what I understand Richard is saying, you can write some code which will "trigger", so put in action a dse which is a more complex code allowing you to make much more complex things than a duf only can do. But I have no clues how to do that, and no other details. But this would be smart because it would allow you to transform your duf files (the general files created by DS) in more clever files with more potential.
