Poser to prop?

Well, I got a newsletter from Hivewire this morning. They've got a nice bundle of stuff with an Africa theme on offer.

Some of the items are ones that have been available from other stores before, or are (well, duh) for Dawn, so the whole bundle is a non-starter. But some of the components are pretty tempting.

Problem, however, is that a particularly spectacular jewelry set that I was interested in, is flagged as only working in Poser. Now, I don't know if they are talking about the materials, or the rigging. But I've been stung by V4 content rigged for Poser 10, and I can't imagine that content for Dawn would be any better. Still there seem to be fewer moving parts than in the wings that are almost unusable, and most of the set could be used if they were props.

So, I'm assuming that there is a way to load an item into studio and export it as a prop? Will that get rid of incompatible rigging? Or is there another way to get around the issue (assuming that the incompatibility isn't just a dependency on shader nodes?

Dawn does have separate Poser adn DS versions, so it's likely that if there are only Poser files they will not work as figures in DS. I would expect them to load OK in the zero pose, and then to be exportable as OBJ, but it's not something I've tried to know for certain.

If you're talking about the Maasai Finery, the jewelry is conforming figures for Dawn, so they most probably use poser weightmapping.

Judging from the very few "Poser Dawn" items I have, the cr2 should load in DS, with a good number of warning messages due to different weightmapping. Once loaded the rigging probably won't work properly and you're likely to see distortions if you try to use the bones. So you'll need to rerig them, or treat them as props either .

Alternatively, you could probably import the original objs directly.

I have no idea how well the materials will work, there are a good number of texture files so they're probably compatible up to a point.

Yeah, the Maasai set. Well, I've got Blondie 9999's rigging tutorials, so this might be a reasonable subject to try them out on. (The wings just look too complex to even think about for a tryo.) And importing the .objs and applying textures manually, could conceivably get around it.

Do imported .objs come in with their matt zones? Or do you need to rebuild them in Studio?

Haven't made my mind up, but at least it does sound like a solid maybe.

Yes, imported OBJs bring in the material zones - and groups, but those get lost in the Transfer Utility.
