Questions regarding compatibility of V6, V4, V4.2 content

After reading a lot of information regarding this matter, I am still not 100% sure about some compatibility questions concerning Victoria 6, Victoria 4 and Victoria 4.2. and since I would hate to purchase any items that later prove to be useles for me (or would require additional investments) I am hoping to get some helpful responses regarding the following scenarios:

1. Is it right that assuming I have V6, but not the V4 or 4.2 base, and buy a character morph for V4 or V4.2, it wont be usable for V6? And if so, does the "Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female" upgrade change that or does it only allow the auto-fitting of V4 clothing?

2. If I have the V4.2 Base and buy a character morph for V4, can it be used for V4.2? And if yes, will I need the V4.2Morphs++ package as well to make it work or not? The other way around V4.2 morphs wont be applicable to V4 I guess?

3. Can a character from one base model of a certain generation be used by another base model of the same generation? (e.g. is a Stephanie 6 character usable for V6?)

I thank you in advance for any answers!

Morphs for V4 will NOT work on V6 or V5 or any other Victoria out of the box. They are all completely different models with different meshes. V4 for Genesis makes G2F ''look' like V4, but it still uses the same mesh as G2F. http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-for-genesis-2-female does supply an Autofit clone, so that V4 clothing can be used directly on G2F.

    2. If I have the V4.2 Base and buy a character morph for V4, can it be used for V4.2? And if yes, will I need the V4.2Morphs++ package as well to make it work or not? The other way around V4.2 morphs wont be applicable to V4 I guess?

There really only is V4.2, it was V4 briefly on release, but within a few days, it was upgraded to V4.2. Any time you see V4 quoted anywhere, it is synonymous with V4.2

    3. Can a character from one base model of a certain generation be used by another base model of the same generation? (e.g. is a Stephanie 6 character usable for V6?)

Stepanie 6 and Victoria 6, are both morphs for Genesis 2 Female, so you need to apply the morph to the base (G2F).

All generation 6 characters are morphs of either G2M or G2F.

All Generation 5 characters are morphs of Genesis (the original one)

All Generation 4 characters (S4, A4, She Freak 4 etc) are all morphs of V4 (Base shape)

Prior to that (Generation 3), they were all separate characters.

    Does that help for now?

Thank you Jimmy, this does in fact already help a lot!

Ok so V4 and V4.2 can be treated as the same. It's just that I read in this thread http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/24257/ that V4.2 was an update to V4.1 and that to V4 so I wasn't sure if content for those was supported vice versa or not, so thank you for clearing up that one.

Concerning my third question, I do know that Victoria 6 and Stephanie 6 are both based on Genesis 2 Female, so what I actually wanted to ask is if characters like http://www.daz3d.com/ginger where it is explicitly stated that Stephanie 6 is required can be used with Victoria 6 for example. In the compability mattrix here for example http://www.daz3d.com/compatibility-matrix it states at least the morphs should be. (and since in my concrete example the description says the textures are based on G2F in this case it would mean it is completely compatible with V6, right?)

To get the character to look EXACTLY like in the promo shots, you would need to have Stephanie 6 loaded first. If you load V6, and apply the morph, it will work, but it probably wont look exactly like the one which is based on S6 to start with.

V6 is UV Mapped for Genesis 2 F, V6 and V5, Ginger will work with any G2F figures as it says on the Product Page, so the textures will work as well.

Any G2F morphs should work OK with any Generation 6 characters, but if you apply the morphs that come with G2F on the base figure, and then apply the same morphs to an already morphed figure (V6 for example) the results will not be exactly the same since the starting point is different. Hope that makes sense?

Yes, your reasoning makes perfect sense, I actually thought of the problem with the different morphing results myself after I submitted my last post. The question is of course to what extent the results will differ, but since in my case the alternative would be a lot more expensive, I think I will just take that risk. ;)

So thank you once again for your fast and thorough help!!

    My pleasure.

If it doesn't work out for you, you can always return the item for a refund during the 30 day grace period.

A few days? More like a few years  (december 2006 for V4.0, february 2008 for 4.2).

But effectively today you can treat V4 and 4.2 as the same, and everything marked "V4" will work with 4.2.

I checked and Ginger uses the Base Female UVs, so the skin will work just fine. The body/head shape used 0.5 Stephanie 6 along with the Ginger shape.

If you do not own Stephanie 6, I expect you will get error messages about missing morphs, but I think the shape will load all the morphs you do have. The shape will be a little different without the S6 morphs, but you should still be able to use her.

This seems an OK thread to ask this question which might be about a V6 compatibility or it might be some other issue, but as the issue first showed up after installing V6 I thought I post here instead of starting a new topic.

I recently got the V6 model and after installing it - & after hassling a bit with getting Smart Contents back in order - I am missing two functionalities for the G2 figures. One is that under Shaping the group of sliders making the figure fat or skinny or muscular or male/female or child/adult is no where to be found. It used to be that I'd select the G2 figure, go to Shaping & there would be a whole bunch of shape modifiers but now there is only (for instance) a single slider for a G2 female & that is the Basic Female slider. Another thing that has disappeared is when (again, for instance) I'd select the head of a G2 figure and got to Pose & Animate there would be a group of sliders for such things as eyes up/down & left right, wrinkle nose, & and a whole bunch of other details. Now there is only the rotation and scale sliders when the head is selected.

Needless to say, I miss those shaping and detail pose controls. Does anyone have any idea what went wrong & what I can do about it?

I believe you are confusing the Genesis 1 figure V5 with the Genesis 2 Female figure V6. The G2F figure does not have a Basic Child slider. I believe you have confused G1 for G2 fully in truth.

been there with the morph mix-ups between G1 and G2, lol

I just had a sinking feeling about something. Only Pro bundles come with ALL "critical bodily equipment", What about that non-pro "Victoria 4.2 Base"??? Or that shapes bundle thing for 4th-gen-figures on Genesis mesh thing? There just Unic-like figures aren't they?
    http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-2-base
    http://www.daz3d.com/generation-4-legacy-shapes-for-genesis-2-female
    etc.
    (edit)
And from the looks of it, some of the extra figures that are included with the pro combos, also don't include personal parts.
Example; Olympia 6 pro, vs the included Kori, Nidale, and FW Diana.

For V4 M4 the bits come with Morphs++ if I remember correctly.
For the other Pro level figures the Bits come with the Pro version, that bit should work on the other Figures from that Base figure as long as the texture set includes the Bit textures. Not all PA's make the Textures for the bits as they had no plans for the character to be used that way. It is the PA's choice to do them or not.

I had failed to notice a distinction between Genesis & Genesis2. I'm a little fuzzy on the character figures. But, I uninstalled everything except the Genesis Essentials and still do not have the Shaping Morphs or Posing details. I also just noticed that in the Content section the only thing under DAZ Studio Formats/My Library there is only the scene files I've made where before a lot of the content was there. Now everything is under Poser Formats/My DAZ 3D Library. I'm a little past my expertise trying to trouble-shoot the problem.

What you need to do, is post a screenshot of your Content Directory Manager, so that we can see what you have set up as library folders.

Genesis and the newer Genesis 2 (Male and Female) are in DAZ Studio Format, all of the figures produced by DAZ 3D prior to that, Victoria 4, Michael 4, Victoria 3, Michael 3 etc. etc. are ALL in Poser Format. See this thread for a clearer idea of DAZ 3D figure history:

Scott Livingstone DAZ Figure History: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/24257/

If you installed all of your content using DIM, then it will all have been put into C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library which is the default location.

You must make sure that the path to My DAZ 3D Library is listed in the Content Directory Manager as BOTH DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats, if you don't have these paths listed in BOTH content types, you will not find any of your content in DAZ Studio.

DIM (DAZ Install Manager) installs to My DAZ 3D Library, but it does not communicate with DAZ Studio, so you need to make sure that the paths to your content are set up correctly.

Yes, the public directory Library was listed only under Poser Formats and between your advice and re-checking the FAQs I got it. I mapped the public My DAZ 3D Library directory into DAZ Studio Formats in the CDM and now have the missing morphing and posing functionalities back. Should I do any data base management or any thing else to it?

I've gone ahead and attached a screen shot of the CDM taken AFTER I got the content mapped and useable just in case you see something else about it that might need attention.

Thanks to everyone for helping me get a handle on this.

Everything looks OK as far as the CDM is concerned.

You don't have Products or Categories in your Content Library pane (see below), these are controlled by the database software, so something is amiss.

In the drop down menu at the top right of the Content Library pane, select Content DB Maintenance, and try the reimport Metadata option to see if that helps.

When you installed the latest version, did you select the PostgreSQL options and install them? We may need to go through that with you, but everything will work, you just wont be able to see Products and Categories, or use the Search function in the Content Library either (not to mention not seeing Smart Content at all!)

I did some data base management after that last screen shot. Following are two current screen shots.
I checked the DIM and it shows PostgreSQL CMS (Win 64-bit) and PostgreSQL CMS From Valentina CMS Conversion as installed. And I am on a 64-bit machine running Windows7 and using DAZ Studio 4.6 (Win 64-bit).
