Character Preset question

I've saved a generic character (a guard) as preset. I assumed I'd be able to find that character in the smart content or content library pane so insert into any scene that needs a guard. But I can't find the character. When I try "Import" the .duf file for that character is grayed out.

Am I doing this right?

I think the easiest way would be to save your character as a "scene subset". This way, your character is saved "as it is", which means that you can shape it, cloth it, pose it, etc. Then you can load it into any scene without problems.

What's the difference between a scene subset and a character preset? I did find my character by using a filter for the name in the smart content panel.

As said above, in a scene subset everything is saved as it is. So you can shape your character, pose it, add hair and clothes, textures and so on. This saves you time if you create a special character that you want to use in different scenes, because if you load it, everything is there already. Of yourse you can re-work everything in the new scene.

Doesn't a character preset do the same? I am creating this sort of stock infantryman…so it is figure, wardrobe, helmets and weapon…and want to easily popular other scenes with them.

A related question. Is there a way to quickly copy a figure within a scene? Ideally I'd just click on the item in the scene pane and right-click a "duplicate item" button, but there is no such thing and copy and past doesn't work in this way. Instances aren't quite right as if I posed one figure, they'd all adopt that pose, right?

Well, I am not sure about that, because I never use it, but I think that a character preset only saves the shape of a character and maybe the skin texture. Like the characters you can buy in the store.

Oh I get it now. That makes sense.

A character preset saves the character's morph and/or texture, and is meant to be applied to a loaded blank figure.

A scene subset is an entire saved object with its textures and morphs. As XoechZ has noted, it can also be posed. It's basically just a chunk of a scene.

A wearables preset is clothing and smartprops and is meant to be loaded onto a blank figure also.

A Character preset saves the materials and shape. If you want clothes you can use a wearables preset, but that won't include materials or morphs for the figure. A sceen subset is probably the best option.

The latest release has added a Duplicate sub-menu to the Edit menu.
