ugly highlight in 3d view

Does anyone know how to turn off the ugly figure highlighting in the 3d View? Or at least change the color to one that doesn't make my eyes bleed?

for anyone who has the same issue in future:
the tool settings pane has a Draw Style option set it to bounding box only.
