    have you seen http://www.digitalcarversguild.com/plugin.php?ProductId=17 ?

    or http://carraracafe.com/tutorials/grunge-blood-textures-in-carrara-i/

    or simple tut:

in carrara you can use the operator thing in the shader room

in colour parameter choose operator> mixer

then choose two textures in the tree below that (textures of your choice)in the blender area put in a grunge texture of your choice

so the top texture might be shiny metal
the bottom texture a rusty metal

the grunge texture will mix the two according to the amount of black or white in the texture

altearnatively you could choose operator>add or multiply
and mix the eg shinty metal texture with a rust texture using that method

plenty of grunge textures on the net but you can paint your own for more control

    eg

I do recommend you this tutorial: Hard surface texture painting
In Carrara, you can use elevation or slope (or even snow) shaders as mixer.
If you happen to own baker plugin, you can generate an occlusion map as in this tutorial.
For scratches, there are a lot of photoshop brushes that can be easily converted to Carrara D paint brushes.

Holly at the Carrara Cafe has been gathering and organizing all the Carrara tutorials she can get a hold of. You may find some there.
