Urban River - my new WIP

Ah, building is so much more fun than rendering! :cheese:

Just thought I'd post a few early WIP screens of my new project, Urban River. Loosely based on the canyonised rivers that flow through the heart of Tokyo, each turn reveals a different environment - leisure and fishing, with a small boat dock, wildlife, with reed beds, rocks and a weir, and adventure, a playground for the daring.

Or something like that! ;)

Thanks Dartan :) Long way to go yet, though! (I should try something "quick and simple", but I'd only keep expanding it...)

The roof still needs a bit of work, but the first house is more or less complete. :)

I am really liking that house. Are you planning to do interiors for a couple of your buildings too?

Probably not - it's going to be pretty big just with exteriors!

Thanks Phil - much of it is down to your tutorials (and once I've mastered trees...) :-)

I've had a small change of direction. Okay, quite a big one - 180 degrees! Now instead of an "S" shape, the river goes through a "u" shape, or possibly a "P" It doesn't do a lot to the square footage, but makes for a more compact scene, and better "ends" to the river.

Gosh it's been a few days since I posted an update (been a bit fraught, what with this database malarky and so on), anyhow, things are progressing onwards and upwards... :)

Nothing really's textured at the moment - the bridge and the torii just have colours assigned, and the grass at back is Dartan's shader as a tempo. There's one more big building to add on the infill, and of course the buildings around the edge. Then trees, plants and detailing!

Interesting architecture you got there. You have skills. :-)

It's kind of a mash-up of bits of modern Tokyo, historic Kyoto and one or two other places! But certainly very Japanese influenced :)

As you might have seen from my other thread,I've been looking at textures and shaders the past few days. So here'a a wip of some early efforts in that direction. :)

    Yeah... you go, Tim!
I think you're getting a good handle on texturing. Keep up the excellent work!

Thanks guys :) Dartan, it's still got your procedural grass shader, which I'm trying to wrap my head around - that's why it loos so good! lol

    More shaders, and some detailing...

I've now got my own water shader rather than one of the built in ones. A slight brown tint made it look a lot better, although a mud texture on the river bed does most of the work. A simple two-tone grass terrain shader was the result of re-watching one of Phil's vids.

Oh, and that back lot behind the angle building - I decided to make it a bit run down! Gonna be lots of people "walking the girder" I reckon... ;)

Still tempo shaders, but an interesting view through the torii :)

Haven't looked at this angle for a while. :) Starting to add some of the outlying buildings now around the edges. There's no new buildings to put in the middle - it's just adding detail & texturing now (i.e. the other 90%!), & then onto the greenery...
