making a prop fit

Hey all, I want to apologize up front because this is probably just another case of me being a stupid nube. I've made a prop - a hangman's noose. I made it with primitives and worked around with textures to make it look pretty good. But it is extremely difficult to pose and I can't make it look like it is tight against my outlaws throat. I tried rigging, using the transfer utility - which just turned my rope into a stick that was running through my character, and tried the basic re-sizing avenues, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Thank you in advance.

One thing that might help is using the smoothing modifier with the collision (edit - object - geometry - apply smoothing modifier). This way the noose will collide with the neck, giving a better fit, or the neck will collide with the noose, making it more realistic.

    Hi!

A rope object is probably not going to work well as a conformer. Rigging a long object is something I specialize in, so I can tell you it is not normally a quick process.

The quickest you can probably do is to leave it as is and create some morphs to fit it to your specific character. Of course, that won't work with it being made of primitives. You'd need to export and reimport it as an obj so that it has a real geometry.

thanks I'll give that a try

Okay, it worked to an extent. But even after I exported it and then imported back in, it still doesn't want to fit right. Is there a way to measure the diameter of the character's neck so that I could make the diameter of the noose match? Would that make it fit better?

Do you have, and are you able to use, a 3d modeling program?

I don't have one at the moment. I had blender for a little while, but that computer crashed. Would that be a program that would work?

Yes, and I very much recommend that for making your own items, but be aware that it will take a bit to learn the basics.

K thanks. Yeah, when I had it before, I hadn't gotten a chance to really mess with it before that computer crashed. I hope it won't be too difficult to figure out.
