What is the difference between GL and GLSL?

I tried looking up the difference between these two and as of yet found nothing that explains it in plain English so in the meantime while I am searching I though it might be easier to ask.

In DS in the General Renders setting Quality V Speed settings panel. Level 4 3Delight (no problems with that) but the next are labelled as thus:
Level 3 Open GL GLSL Hardware Assisted Render
Level 2 Open GL with shadows Hardware Assisted Render
and
Level 1 Open GL Preview no Shadows

My Q is what is the difference between level 3 and 2. I see no difference when I render.

    Greetings,
Theoretically it should give you more accurate shader actions, since GLSL is the Open GL Shader Language. But I don't ever render in it, so I have no idea if it's actually doing that, or if it did once but doesn't now. :)

I have to admit, I almost never use the other render modes than 'level 4', the 3Delight renderer. I suppose I should, maybe it'd catch certain issues quicker than spot-rendering.

I suppose I will keep on searching for the answer.
