I know what it does and what needs Max Ray Trace depth adjusting etc but how in 3Delight is it handled. Through the camera only or lights too? The engine must have a point of reference to start ray tracing from and this would explain how the camera handles fog etc.

Yeah been there and read that and it doesn't help with explaining how it works in 3Delight.
This is a fairly easy to understand article on the Pixar site. There are several more articles around, though I think it is a good start. 3Delight is RenderMan-compliant.
