~Poll~ Product Content should include content for Daz Studio or Poser or Both
In an attempt to keep product content relevant to customer requirements. I have started a poll in regards to finding out what you most like to see in contents in regards to software compatibility.
In an ideal world every product would be compatible with all major software, but as the divide between software specific settings increases, cross platform compatibility comes at a cost of time and resources in product development. And in reality the extra time in development is translated to higher ticket prices on products that offer broader cross platform support.
This poll is generally aimed around products like prop packs created for Daz Studio and Poser and not program specific products.
Do you prefer to see a product with specific materials presets and props for both software platform (Daz Studio & Poser) or do you dislike paying extra for compatibility you don't use?
Remember this poll is about what content you want to see in product and not about discussing program pros and cons.
So please avoid flammable comments regarding rationales for specific program preference here or reasons why program A should be supported more than program B.
Thanks for taking the time to vote!

I chose: Daz Specific Content only (at lower price).
It is natural - DS supports the newest figures AND Generation 3-4. Plus it is free, so the customer can invest more in high-quality content.
That only makes sense for those people who use DS. Those of us who use Poser, especially those who still have older versions, would rather see dual usage to allow the maximum number of people to be able use the content straight out of the box.
Only a small fraction of buyers from the store actually visit the forums and will take part in this poll so the results may not be accurate. That said, I do prefer separate packages for Poser and DS and then bundled for those who would like both. However, my preferences as a buyer may not be to the advantage of the PA so I suppose the number of sales PAs have is probably the best indication.
A couple of examples that spring to mind are Predatron (who usually had both Poser and DS versions) and Goldtassel's hair. Both their latest products are DS only so maybe sales for Poser content are too low for them to support.
If I were using both software, I think I'd be annoyed having to buy things twice for functionality. But at the same time, (as I only use one of them) it is a bit of a loss having to pay the 'unknown' extra cost for compatibility in a software I don't use in the single pack with both. - That said I think when options are offered as separate (one Poser and one DS) the price often appears higher than the similar products that are All-in-one. So theres really allot to think about.
I can't really answer without knowing how much of a price difference we're talking about. I only use DS right now--it's possible that I'll also want to use Poser in the future.
I use both and would prefer a product just work in both, like scenery or objects. But if it is includes DS specific tech to work, then DS only at the lower prices.
Chohole makes an interesting point. Does an increase in cost (time) to produce both result in more product sales from a second group that otherwise wouldn't have purchased it, and thus actually produce a net reduction, not increase, in cost? It probably won't be an even 50/50 split between DS and Poser content preference by customers, so while production time will increase either way, there will probably be a slight increase in cost for adding support to the application that sells less than half BUT there would be decrease in cost (technically an increase in profit canceling out your cost increase) for adding support to the application that sells more than half. Depending of course on sales volume, and on which application your content was originally produced for and which is the 2nd one you wanted to start supporting, it could go either way. Presumably if you are selling content you already know which way it goes for you, but just wanted to make this point clear that results could be different to other people reading this poll if they are adding support from the opposite application as you.
In any case, I opted for no preference. I use DAZ Studio, not Poser, however when the .daz format went obsolete and one or two issues with older scenes not working correctly anymore in newer versions of DS popped up, I suddenly had need of the corresponding poser format files to use within DAZ Studio. Although the new .duf format should eliminate those issues, I'm now categorizing the poser format files right alongside the DS format files just in case anything unexpected should happen in the future that requires using them again. I don't require the Poser format, but neither do I mind.
i like separate ds and ps packages.
i'm serving the 2 masters now. when DS5 and PP15 are out, planning to choose.
I understand Chohole. The best solution for me would be splitting the core and the files that have to differ depending on the application. This way, let's say, I want a dress which has different material presets for DS and Poser. I will get the core (the geometry etc.) and then choose: DS, Poser or both? It would be cheaper and COULD increase the sales, attracting people who'd try both applications but cannot afford trying lots of content.
I don't like the idea of splitting them up. You wanna make two different installers that's one thing. I'm not going to make someone buy the pack twice just because they want to use it in DS and Poser. I support all the way back to Poser 6 and just gave up on supporting DS3 and only support DS 4.5 and above.
A good, non-hypothetical, case in point is HiveWire's Dawn figure. I was onboard early on, but she faded out of favor with me as I was tired (and still AM tired of) having to buy EITHER the DAZ or Poser set or both of everything. A morphed out V4/M4 or any Genesis figure suits me just fine, but I was NOT interested in buying two versions of the same item even though I use both DAZ and Poser. NOT INTERESTED AT ALL.
But I am reasonable in that I can see how DAZ only users would feel a little sore about having to pay for Poser content they'll ?never? use. Sales wise, it is true that sometimes I pass on DAZ content that is DAZ ONLY because I don't know enough how to convert it myself or how to fix anomalies and if I figured it out, I often do not have time to fiddle with it.
I guess my answer is a firm: Yes, No, Maybe!
I vote both being included. Being a user of both programs I tend to sway more toward Poser 7 and actually do not mind having to pay for the daz files even if I may not use them.
I use both Poser and DAZ Studio. I don't mind having separate products for DAZ and Poser as long as a bundle is also offered containing both at a slightly higer price. I didn't see the bundle as a voting option in the poll so I didn't vote.
Can the content be made native to both programs? Does the person making the content know how to set it up in both programs?
A new user who starts off with DAZ Studio and the Genesis figures may not have seen Poser or even tried it. So when they decide to make something like a prop or building or even a car that could be setup for use in Poser, they would not have the know-how to do so and would thus only set it up in DAZ Studio.
I see no reason for a PA to be required to support Genesis outside of its host application.
I'm just finishing up a set that is seperated into a Studio set and a Poser set. I could have combined them but the reality is because of the size of the product (117 shader/material presets) it took a week to do the studio set up and another full week (70+ hours) to redo everything for Poser. I could have increased the price to cover an extra week but that just didn't seem fair to people who only want one version.
The crucial point is how much extra work is involved in producing for both programs. If you're spending an extra 10% of time to produce for both, then I see no real reason for not doing it, and you can sell it for the same price because you will sell more anyway. I can only see the point of separate products if there is proportionately a significant amount of extra time needed (like Khory's shaders).
I can often take part of the Poser content and part of the Studio 4.6 content, cobble them together, and make something that will at least passably work in legacy versions of Studio. Of course, that requires having both versions available.
A quick thank you for those that voted in this poll and a special thankyou for those that took the time to comment.
Your feedback is appreciated and there have been some good points raised here and I will take them onboard in developing future content for both Poser and Daz Studio.
It'll probably be PP16 (they tend to skip a year during development) and if you're me the answer is "both!" :-D I may be one of the few people who actively use both products and doesn't prefer one over the other. I have been a Poser user since P6, which by now practically makes Poser an extension of my body. I jumped into Studio when DS3-pro was a PC item for $1.99 during PC appreciation month. I was also one of the folks who invested a large chunk of change in DS4 before it was free. Never regretted any of the above decisions. I know my purchase supported the development of DS4.5 and 4.6, which I love. I'm annoyed by things that have Poser-only and DS-only packages without a bundle for both. I don't mind spending more for both packages combined, but I hate spending double, usually because I know I can get one format to work in the other with a little extra work. Spending extra for the convenience is okay. Buying the whole product twice is where I draw the line. I usually end up arguing with myself over which to buy and then getting neither, lol. When the product is only available in one format or another, I've developed the patience to make it work where I want it to work. It's kinda nice -- I feel bilingual!
