Moving all storage to a server

So my hard drive is getting full with all the fun stuff i'm finding, buying and a friend has given me. I'm learning slowly, but i'm having fun.

I recently got an old PC from the office with a lot of extra storage space and i'm going to set it up on the network as a storage server. So here's the list of what do i need to do if i want to move everything content wise off my PC and onto the server

What files do i need to copy over to it? (library, 5 database files, etc)

After i move the above list over and point the CM to that new location all i need to to do is reimport the metadata?

With the import of metadata will my categories come back automatically?

Should i leave the stuff on my PC alone and just start adding any new stuff to the server, for simplicity?

I'd really like to keep everything together for organization and backup purposes.

Thanks in advance.

What type of stuff has your friend given you?

He gave me a couple of clothing kits he bought just so i had something to learn on. I've added them to my wish list so that i can buy them as funds allow, and i've bought a couple back already.

Fear not i'm seeing how much work has gone into this and i'm going to make sure i support the artists.

Until you have bought the items you need to remove them from your system - aside from the simple legal position that will make sure you aren't using an older version, possibly with compatibility issues that will bite you later.

I started to ask more questions and explain my side and so on and so forth, but after doing the typing i've come to this conclusion.

i'm going to just toss my hands into the air and give up on the whole damned thing count the $ i've spend lost, uninstall the whole thing because a simple technicality of a friend helping me get started seems to be more important than the issue i've asked about. Because had it not been for my friend i never would have even spent the money i've spent. I would have looked at the prices, and said F that.

Again I completely understand the legality, and as i've said, I have bought several of what was given to me to help, and i understand the complexity of doing this, but the prices for someone who has a small budget for stuff like this will take me months even years to have a base had it not been for that help.

So thanks for the help. Maybe next year i'll take a look at this again and see if it's worth the $ and effort. I was hoping to be like the designers here and on shareCG but i guess that's a pipe dream.

    Good luck.

Sorry, we just had to let you know that it's against the EULA. All you should need to do is move your library folder to whatever drive you want it and point DS to that location. Are you using the DAZ Install Manager to install your content?

i understand your reasons. next time i'll leave out the help from a friend comment, but felt honesty was best in this case because i see the closeness of the community, that's why i am buying them still. I've read a lot of posts and knew i needed to give you all the information. It's just frustrating to get needled without the added help.

I've used the DIM for the stuff i've bought, i've manually copied and pasted the stuff from ShareCG. The the clothing items a couple were exe files he had gotten with the V4 clothes. ( i was stoked when the v4 bundle went on sale so i could use them easier). I've put the couple of the g2f items into the download folder and let the DIM install them.

So the questions raised were how to you uninstall if you didn't have the exe install add the uninstaller (i hate clutter and extra stuff i don't think i need, guess i was wrong)

So if i've done the install and bought the items and let the DIM reinstall them (more so for the V4 stuff) what are the issues that van bite me later? I know it was a pain juggle between poser formats and daz formats before i got the whole v4 bundle.

I think i'm going to have to uninstall a few games to free up space anyway didn't realize i only have 10g.

So in theory i can copy the Library folder to the server and point DS to the new location and everything will be in the same location and i won't have to do anything with the database files or my user data for categories?

I can then remove the old location pointer? I have a feeling i'm going to be reorganizing my categories again soon.

I'll hunt through some other threads on the software needed to create locations at least if i can from pictures, as i've got ideas on creating scenery at the local battle field.

I'm using the Install Manager. I have moved my content from my currently crowded 120GB solid state C: drive to my more spacious D: drive and have successfully pointed DS to the new locations. Now I'm not quite sure about what to do about the Install Manager. I created a new path in the Installation tab and got this message:

"The folder specified contains files that were not installed by Install Manager. It is strongly recommended that an empty folder, or a folder previously managed by Install Manager, be selected." I do have a lot of freebie content I got off ShareCG, Renderosity's free stuff section, Foundation 3D, etc. in addition to items previously purchased from both DAZ 3D and Renderosity, maybe that's what the message is about?

Am I OK to add the new path, or should I leave the default installation path and just move the content from C: to D: manually?

is this for backup or for runtime?
Runtime over a network share is going to be noticeably slower, remember it's not just the file you need to open but data files and images that are inclusive.

by runtime i'm guessing you are talking opening those files within ds? If that's the case then yes runtime, i can live with a bit of lag in the initial loading of the data into DS

also navigating your runtime will be affected. It's noticeable when you move to a USB 2 HD, ethernet will probably be far slower.
Are you running gigabyte LAN capable hardware?

So it's looking like i need to leave the DS library on my PC, and move all my iTunes movies and music to the server, and delete some old games.

I'm using a fios router with Cat 6 and all NICs are 1gb capable.

I recently purchased a NAS for all my runtimes and went through this same thing.

In my case, I had 2 folders which Daz utilized:

C:\User\AccountName\Documents\Daz3D\My Library for my general stuff
C:\User\Public\Documents\Daz3D\My Library for my DIM-installed stuff.

It is relatively easy to move those...just copy both folders to your server:

C:\User\AccountName\Documents\Daz3D\My Library COPIED TO Z:\Runtimes\My Library
C:\User\Public\Documents\Daz3D\My Library COPIED TO Z:\Runtimes\DIM Library (note the change so I could differentiate DIM versus self-installs)

Mass EDIT the DIM files to point to the new install directory instead of the old one (this is relatively easy with Notepad++ which lets you mass edit multiple files)

Open up DazStudio and in the preferences Content Manager make sure it is pointing to the two new folders.

At this point, you can remove the two old folders as well as the pointers to them in Daz.

I reindexed the metadata, although it looked like it was working fine after the move, but wanted to be on the safe side....

As I said, it was relatively easy and the longest part was the copy, as I had a couple hundred GB of runtimes to move over...

the ActionTec MI424WR is the only gigE router for Fios I see on the web, is your router 10/100/1000?

reason I ask is I've done over 10/100 network, over USB 2, over FW800, over ESata over RAID 0 and the fastest overall response I've seen is built in SATA by far. GigE wil be the fastest network but you still have another computer and networking hardware as overhead.

I know the router isn't a gig, it's the original fios router :) I'll move the movies and music to the server and delete a couple of games to keep the daz stuff on the pc.

My router allows me to hook up a USB drive, I keep music and movies on that and just log into it when I want them, but buying two cheep 500GB drives and sticking them in the main box (one live, one backup) seems to be the most responsive solution using the least amount of possible breaking points.

Sadly mine doesn't have the USB port on it. USB 3 ports on the back of my tower might just grab a 2TB external drive. Either way i've got the storage space for either the DS stuff or the itunes library lol.
