Can't get aspect frame to show

I've ticked the Show Aspect Frame option but nothing happens. Help mentions 'You should see the aspect frame appear unless you have ‘Active Viewport’ as your aspect ratio setting'. This bit has me stumped, where do I fix this?

    Under the "Render Settings" pane in the "Dimensions" part, you set the frame using the Preset drop-down.
