Creating content which is compatible with other models and sets...ethics/legality/regulations?

I have a question to pose to the community. In my advanced AutoCAD class, I was developing an exterior ship model which was meant to be compatible with interior models composed by another creator. I was not trying to piggyback on their success...but rather, their existing models helped me build the ship in terms of physical dimensions and proportions.
In AutoCAD model space, the idea is to work in 1:1 scale. (This drives me nuts with lighting and the render system, but that's another issue). I purchased Kibaretto's Starcarrier for use as a hangar model...and it gave me an idea on how wide to design this ship.
In my particular situation...I would want to get in contact with the Kibaretto creator/IP holder so I can confer with them as to what would be acceptable versus not acceptable. I do not want to release a product that could be considered a violation of someone else's property. I believe that there is a point at which proper permission must be secured, and this is such a point.
I would also want to provide dev information on my own "ship set" property so that people with items that could be "through-hull" sets could develop their own through-hull kits for distance shots.
Is there a proper way to contact property owners within the Daz community? I tried to contact Kibaretto but I could not.

I'm not sure how often Kibaretto posts on the forum - you could try searching for him in the member list and PMing him. You could also open a support ticket and ask for your request to be forwarded.
