Cannot Texture wings

Okay.. sorry if this is in the wrong place... or if I sound like a noob.
I know I may need to something with UV mapping but I know nothing about going about that....
I crafted these dragonfly-style wings (for a faerie) and got them looking good. I used mudbox to shape them.. then took this nice render shot from which I created the diffuse map (with plans to make a bump and opacity map to finish the project).
Loaded it up and I got the texture background.
Offset the map vertically and horizontally... I get a random color (like the wing will turn grey or red) but that's it.
if you need more info, screenshots, etc. let me know.
Thanks.

Sounds like your mesh isn't UV mapped.
Heres not a bad place to start getting your head around UV mapping: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/UV_Map_Basics
UV mapping is neither a quick skill to learn nor is it always straight forward process, but practice makes perfect and it is essential if you enjoy modelling.
