I have been endlessly looking at GIS LIDAR DEM programs to create cool 3D flyovers of real cities without much success
Most use city engine and ESRI ARCGIS etc and cost thousands
Cinema4D just got a cool DEM plugin fir making cities too the last CGsociety newsletter informed me
Not holding my breath for a Carrara or Bryce one
But
Above link looks promising
Open source, creative commons are words that are music to my ears
Whether I can figure it out another matter
My Kibbereto space ships and all the new UFO's in store need cities to invade badly

It's been a while and I don't have Bryce installed on the new box yet but I could have sworn I used DEM with it.

not having much luck UV mapping to a satellite image
cannot get it to fit
think the image is skewed

If you can make an Atlas UV map for the whole object, fit the satellite image to that in 2D space as best you are able then bake that to the UV map :)
I discovered my issue
the UV mapping on each surface is not identical
it had no UV mapping so I flat mapped it
but each mesh is offset by its vertex centre
so images did not fit
so I matched up separate ones in GIMP
(yes ps1borg I had tried 2D fitting to UV map as a layer I resized rotated skewed)
this is obviously of more interest to me than other people
but

This has interesting possibilities, though what I'd really like is something that could be pulled off Googlemaps, so the aerial views could be layerd on the objects for 2 1/2D work.

I know ESRI ArcGIS and City Engine can do it if you have the money :lol:
Google Earth will give 3D images too if only one could save them as mesh
as for the images inc the satellite one I applied to my mesh

so in other words no models using them as textures, My render in this thread includes the original with copyright displayed as specified and is just my own personal experiment.
one would need to find an opensource image to redistribute a model
You can download and save the Google Earth 3D terrain meshes via SketchUp, see the tutorial Here. It's using Rhino as the modeler to import to, but the principles are the same for any app. But it doesn't do the cities as in your pic above.
