Do any GIMP users out there have suggestions for good website(s) with forums to get GIMP newbie questions answered?

I'd say here ;-). What sort of questions do you have?

    I sometimes frequent gimpusers.com
Don't know how the forums are, but they have some useful tutorials occasionally.

@wwes, thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

I recently discovered that gimp refuses to open some files, however those files open just fine with Windows Photo Viewer. I don't know if there's a bug in gimp, or if all these files are somehow damaged in some way that Windows Photo Viewer is able to recover from or fake data for but that gimp cannot. However, since it seems as though the image itself is still viewable, I'm wondering if there's some way to recover it, or a workaround to open them all. (And of course if it turns out the files are all fine and there is a problem with gimp, I'd like to let them know.)

EDITED TO ADD: forum won't let me attach an example, it's too big, sorry.

When I open it in gimp, it displays "Opening" and the filename on the status bar at the bottom of the GIMP window, then just sits there and does nothing else, and never completes opening it. Windows Task Manager shows a steady 17% of the CPU going to metadata.exe, (description of "GNU Image Manipulation Program Plug-In", something that must be part of the base gimp package as I never installed any 3rd party plugins)

Ok, I created an account at Photobucket, haven't used this before, let me know if this does not work:
    http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/sriesch/library/

Go to the link, then click on the "download album" link on the righthand side, which will create a zip file, unzip. (Don't click the image, then try to right-click and "save image as"; that seems to save a smaller version, not the actual original file.)

Didn't want to creat an account to download the album

    Get Links->Direct and got a 1024x682 image

Opened with Gimp latest stable 2.8.10 without problem although I have a lot of plugins

As your file is a JPG there shouldn't be any problem on any 2D graphic software as this format is standard

crud, didn't know you needed an account at Photobucket. Do you have a suggestion for how I can share the file?
I can't get into my 4shared account at the moment, I have email out to support (and don't know if you would need an account for that too.) I think Microsoft Skydrive needs an account. The DAZ galleries don't seem to have a download option, and I now know you can't just right click and save to get the original file.

I am also running gimp 2.8.10 . The file is 3072x2048, so the image you are testing with is not the original. However, that brings up an idea, I wonder if there's some way to "convert" the image by intentionally doing this (except that I would like the original resolution to remain, of course, and I don't see a way to do that yet), or if that would introduce significant quality loss.

Google docs needs people to join, so I can't use that. I can't send a PM, because attachments there are limited to 250k (image is 3.49MB).

You can try http://www.imagevenue.com/ or https://imageshack.com/ but I'm not sure they don't process the image somewhat
But to be sure to share your original file without modification I'd rather try something like http://www.mediafire.com/ or https://www.dropbox.com/

Ok, here's the dropbox link. Thank you for taking the extra time to look at this, BTW.

EDITED TO ADD: IN this case, right-click and "Save image as" does result in an identical file.

Did the test and I have the same problem as you

As there is no logfile from Gimp it's a bit difficult to know what's going on

I can confirm under Windows 7, 64-bit GIMP-2.8.8 (no extra plugins), that I also get the same behaviour (metadata.exe goes into a busy loop, loading hangs). Windows Preview is happy with it (a black image with red/blue pixels on it)... IrfanView 4.3.5 is happy with it... LibreOffice 4.2.5 Draw is happy with it... ImageMagick 6.7.3 is happy to display metainfo, and to read it and convert it to PNG... I'd suggest you've found a bug in GIMP's metadata programming logic (^_^).
