What is Carrara? (Casual Promo Video)

As part of my attempt to show the 3d world what Carrara is all about, I thought I'd start from a beginning.

Not as easy as I thought. Carrara has so much to it!

So here's a casual video I've come up with as an introductory answer to the question: "What Is Carrara?"

Speaking of such, wasn't a group going to do a "Show Reel" for Carrara? Whatever happened to that project?

The community movie project kind of lost its momentum. It seemed to me that it was trying to be forced a bit without first gathering a solid idea, so it became somewhat frustrating in ways. Meanwhile, other parts of it took the opportunity to learn new aspects, use new tools and functions... it was really pretty cool in many ways.

To keep all of that from getting lost, I've consolidated the threads here:
    The Carrara Community Movie Project
This is a consolidation of CMP links

I've recently seen some posts regarding the picking up where this left off over at Carrarators. Unfortunately for me, I don't really get much internet time, and feel somewhat attached to this forum as my main internet activity. If I can get more internet time, I'd like to contribute more at Carrara Cafe. The sad part for me is that I love the site that Double O Seven has created (Carrarators), and really love how it's set up. But by the time I'm done here, I usually have other real-life issue that I have to deal with. Makes me wish that I would have got into a vocation that put me behind a computer screen for a living. I am trying to eventually get there, but I find that my manual labor trained body doesn't really adapt to a computer chair very well - it actually hurts! So I have some physical training to consider,

My hat is off to you, Dartanback. A very complete sales pitch for Carrara, my favorite program.

My view is a little less lofty. I don't have a "pipeline". I just use Carrara to make short animations with Poser type content. And it works great, better than Poser.

OK, I do use Vue, and sometimes Lightwave, but there's no "pipeline", it just comes together in the video editor.

But yeah, Carrara is my tool of choice. And I have tried a LOT of others.

Thank you, Steve! Feels really good to hear you say that, as I know that you're quite ambitious in the realms of animating!
Having tried various others and finding Carrara to be your 'home' is exactly where I am as well, and I feel that we are not alone.

I intend to get a bit more aggressive towards trying to get Carrara noticed a lot more - getting it on the list of 'go-to' apps for animators and other CG needs - because I truly feel that it deserves a decent standing among our current selection of editors/creators on the market.

I would like to see full-time development assigned to Carrara, even if the main team is relatively small at first.

I really think that if more people actually tried Carrara for their Poser or DAZ Studio projects, that they'd feel as we do... and never feel the need to look further. Also those using LW, Maya, 3DS, etc., because of where those apps are placed in the hierarchy of "What should I use" apps, will likely find their projects getting done much more quickly, and to their liking by switching to Carrara at a huge savings!

Nonetheless, I certainly do not wish to down-talk other software - truly not my intention at all, as I feel that they're all good - even great. But Carrara Pro costing nearly the same as Poser Pro gets me to want to tell the world that they should really know about Carrara before writing that check! Yeah, Poser Pro has a lot to offer. And if you really want those tools... go for it! But then after saving that stuff to the Poser runtimes, fire up Carrara and let the real magic ensue!

I just don't want Carrara to be "the best kept secret in 3d suites" anymore! ;)

Nice work Dart. It's nice to see someone promoting a product they are passionate about. It would be even nicer if DAZ was as passionate. But I'm with you 100%. Carrara Rocks. We'll have to rely on DAZ to let out the secret though.

I truly feel that DAZ 3D is still made up of passionate folks, I just hope that we can capture some of their passion for the development of Carrara.

I don't think that they are not intending to develop Carrara. But if more and more artists join in our cause, we just might be able to get more of a constant development cycle going on. ;)

Yes, great video - I'd love to explore Carrara again - I have express 7 but the content just won't install (Windows 7 64 bit) - I've tried running under compatability mode (XP) and just in the default location....nada.... :(

I don't doubt their enthusiasm or passion, but as Carraraists, I don't believe there is anything we can do to help the cause. I've been using Carrara since version 5, and Das Studio since before version 1, as in, I was one of the first to use the beta version of Daz Studio. Still have the original download somewhere in my tb's of stuff. I've bought every version since they started selling the software, and that goes for Carrara as well. They work together well, but I also appreciate the distinct differences in each package, and I've learned to work within those bounds. As far as 'development cycle' is concerned, I am a patient man. (My wife tells me that all the time). Who knows, I could still be playing with Carrara 8.1.0.153 three years form now, and still be content.

Really very well done Dart !
I have like project to do something of equivalent (in French, its my wife's job) for presentation in the clubs of filmakers.
It would be a shorter version, approximately 15-20 minutes.
I realize that there are more and more filmmakers who launch out in the 3D but that they don't know the existance of Carrara.
That is due to the fact that competitors (D/S included) are promoted much better on the net.
My goal is to present the program in general initially, then each specificity in separate presentations.
That takes time, but I would like to start to do that this season 2014-2015.

You know, I'm never really in a hurry to get a new version of Carrara either. Carrara 8 works very well with 64 bit Windows, so I just kept using the C8 beta when I started - as I bought 6 Pro with an upgrade to 7 Pro, which got me 8 Pro for free, at that time. So I've never really used 6 or 7. But C8 Pro has been such a fantastic tool for me... I was perfectly content. I did really enjoy being a beta tester for 8.5, watching and waiting for each next release - seeing it get better and better, while messing with a plethora of shapes on Genesis, mostly (for me) making Monsters!

So I guess I don't really care to push for New Versions all the time, but a few update tweaks, fixing some 'known issues' would be most welcome ;)

Yeah... I realize that I do have the tendency to ramble on a bit too much. I was planning to edit it down some, but decided not to, in the end. After all... it's a free thing. But I also intend to make some more intense Carrara promos and keep them to a much more reasonable size. Not so much 'me talking' and more action!

may I suggest you also post this in the Commons forum too .
I know many of the people don't have a idea what you can do in Carrara .

Rather than posting it again in the Commons ( as we frown on duplicate threads) you could post a link to it in this thread

A very ambitious project. I have to say I laughed when I saw in your commentary "I try to keep things brief" and then the video is almost an hour long! I would aim to keep future instalments shorter and punchier, but all power to you for having a go!

I was just thinking about the Carrara movie project and here is an idea.

How about if we first make a short Carrara Promo video with say the best of the best render images from the users Galleries. Plus they can also submit additional material.

Kinda make this one as Part 2 of the Carrara 8.1 movie but with the Carrara 8.5 touch by using Genesis 2 figures as well as all things Carrara.

    Remember this one. http://youtu.be/Iw67NrdrDug
Well it needs a sequel. ;-)

    Agreed!
Hey, thanks for sharing this, Ringo!
Yeah, I was being brief! I did kinda go off here and there, and then I missed the rest of the upper toolbar.
But there are more to follow, which are going to be more specific.

More towards what Ringo's saying, some of the next videos are going to be more like demo reels advertising Carrara.

On an entirely different subject, kind of...
Watch this one minute clip. Does the guy look and sound a bit familiar? He should. That's my big brother, being interviewed regarding his autonomous vehicle, of which he is the head engineer: A Closer Look at Oshkosh's Unmanned TerraMax Technology
But he doesn't use "ummmm" nearly as much! :ahhh:

Think TerraMax looks interesting? Here's a clip from Top Gear, pitting TerraMax ("Terminator") vs Range Rover in an all-terrain race! :)

Great intro there, Dart - I'll make a point of watching the whole video next month when my bandwidth is re-set. I'm running on low because of the many training vids I've downloaded the past couple of days.

Something that struck me in the intro - in Daz's own words, Carrara is the "best kept secret"! Seems a strange marketing strategy to keep your best product a secret - then boast about it...:)

    mmmmm!
