Very new content problem

Okay, I've been using DAZ studio for a few years now. When I install new content, it goes to the default/unassigned category, where I gather in to a category I have called "Loading Area" to sort it out, and move it to one of the categories I created. It means I can find stuff easily by for example looking in Animals/Domestic/Pets and all my dogs are in one place. So far so good?

Yesterday I installed some new content, something from Renderosity, something from DAZ. The DAZ on has the metadata attached. Got DAZ to search for new content as usual, but nothing showed up.

Went to the product group, and found the folder for the product from DAZ, but it was empty. So it had created the product, but not filled it with the content. Went into the DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats areas and drilled down to find the content, and it is there so has installed (but it is not in blue or labelled new).

Okay, I thought, I'll just categorize them from there. Selected the items and went through the pop-up for categorizing them, seemed okay, but they still didn't show up. As a test I moved and item that had been installed previously from one category to another, and then went without any problem.

So in the spirit of IT, I closed down DAZ and re-opened, closed my PC down and re-opened. Stop the CMS and restarted. Nothing made a difference. I uninstalled the CMS completely, and re-installed DAZ, still nothing.

Without my categories, work is getting to get really hard. I figure that if anyone has read through all the above, they are the sort of person who a) knows stuff and b) likes to help people, so if you got this far, thank you.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

(I have just noticed that in the Content Library drop down menu both the stop and start CMS items are greyed out, so will investigate that further now.)

Okay on looking around someone talked about the CMS log files, so went to have a look and found this for the last couple of days.

And then the last line is repeated several times. What is the subscription valid bit?!

To the best of my knowledge, these option (Start and Stop CMS) are only available if you have PostgreSQL installed, so if you are still using CMS/Valentina then that will not apply.

Can you give a link to the item that you installed from DAZ 3D, and how did you install it, using DIM (DAZ Install Manager) or unzipping it yourself?

Have you tried using the Content DB Maintenance form the CL drop-down menu, then selecting 'Re-Import Metadata' to see if that fixes it?
Is the rest of your Smart Content, including the Products and Categories options, working for other installed items?

Have you checked Task Manager to see if CMS is actually running?

It will allow me to categorize content that was previously installed from the Formats folders to a category, just not the newly installed stuff. I can't see that anything changed from one day to the next. Frustrating.

I never use the Smart Content. Just Categories. Everything works for previously installed content, just not the new stuff. Have re-installed the metadata, and it seems to have doubled up on what I already had. Think it might be time for a complete wipe and start again. Does good sometimes, just so much stuff!
Task manager says it is running, yes.
    I always install manually too.

    This is now ridiculous.
In a bid to try and get something working, I reset the database, thought I'd just get it working and create from scratch.
Everything clears, as it should. I restart DAZ and it's all back!

Was that using the 'Reset Database' option from the Content DB Maintenance menu?

I have never heard of it doing that before, it generally removes everything. The other thing you can do, is delete the database files yourself, that definitely works. Have you exported your 'User data' first? If not, all of the Categories that you created will be lost. They can be re-imported as part of the Metadata if you save them first, so don't do anything rash.

It really is worth considering a move to the PostgreSQL database, it causes far fewer problems than Valentina. It should be in your DIM downloads folder for the latest version of DAZ Studio (4.6.3.52)

Where will I find the database files?
    I have exported user data.
I will check on the PostgreSQL.

My old valentine DB files are in C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service\databases, and there are five of them in total, four are ContentDB of various file types, and one is master.vdb, you could try a search for that?

After saving User Data, the next time you re-import metadata, User data is at the top of the list.

Thank you so much for your help Jimmy, uninstalling the old CMS and installing the new one seems to have worked. I can now put stuff in categories. I seems the last writing out of the user data hadn't work though, so still a lot of stuff to re-sort but at least now I can.

Off to start the mammoth task of finding and organising it all now.....

The UserData_1.dsx file created by the "export user data" option is written to the first native DAZ Studio content folder you have mapped (and that's also the location read from by the "Re-Import Metadata..." option).

Therefore, before using these options, ensure that your first content folder mapping hasn't changed due to a reinstall or other event that could shuffle them around or add/remove mappings, and correct the order if it has, so you don't end up writing to/reading from an old file. Although I'm very careful to check that, I've still found another one of these export files in an unexpected place, and once saw the order of the mapped content folders change unexpectedly.

Also, it might be helpful to move (rather than copy) the exported file to your backup location after backing it up , and delete the temporary copy after importing it (assuming you have the original backup elsewhere). I have accidentally imported an old file and messed up my database that way, and the only way I can think of that it could have happened is because I was probably doing multiple things at once since the export takes a long time, and saw the file when I got back to my computer and assumed that I had just exported it when in fact it was the old file left over from the previous backup long ago and I had forgotten to do the export step. Had that file not been there, I could not have made that mistake.
