Rigging.... what exactly is it, for a really uneducated person on this....

Could you please explain what "Rigging" is in very simple terms...

And could you recommend sources to read to learn more about it..... for someone who knows absolutely nothing about it.

simplest terms would be a model or figure that is given a system of articulation to govern it's posing

this article uses the word "animation" but for the most part in this write up you could apply the concept to Posing the figure in a still image as well.
