Tips on making a sword shine in DS

Does anyone have any tips on how to make a sword blade shine a bit more in DS?

Not necessarily reflect, but more, make it look like shiny metal...a new sword, perhaps.

Would I be looking at the specular and ambient colour? Or the diffuse? How important is the reflection map, and is there a particular reflection map type that I should look at?

You could try to apply the Subsurface Shader on the blade and set the ambient to a high value. This will make it glow. And maybe, with a bit of tweaking you can get the desired effect.

Personally I'd play with the specular and the reflection, I don't really like reflection maps but prefer the object to reflect the surroundings, so you need something to reflect.
The weapons of War pack it was included in the Gianni Pro bundle

has some shiny weapons you might be able to reproduce the same effect if you have them.
Once this render has finished I'll take a look see what the surface settings are.

The weapons aren't smart props but do come with hand poses, here's a quick render of the sword, just 1 AoA Ambient light

Spec sharpness is handy for metals. pwSurface2 and several other surface shaders have that ability.

that looks good, kind of the "shiny" that I was aiming for. :D I'm thinking I may grab those, so I can study the settings and use them on other ones too.

Is it a pain to get the sword up into the hand tho, if they aren't smart props?

I would mention that you should have something to reflect; the brighter and more colorful the environment sphere is, the higher the shine seems to be in reflective surfaces.
