I want to use my own photos/jpgs as backgrounds. I have searched the forums and found how to add a jpg to the background:
Edit / Backdrop, then load the jpg.

Question 1: I want to load a photo onto a plane, but I can't figure out how to do that. Does it have to be in a format other than jpg?

Question 2: I have seen texture sets which are also jpgs. I'm assuming that I could load one of these onto an object (i.e. a wall or in a picture frame) the same way I load a jpg onto a plane?

    .jpg images are fine.

Create your plane, select it in the scene tab. Then go to the surfaces tab. There also select the plane, then apply your image by loading it into the diffuse channel. Look for diffuse, click on the small arrow left of the color, select browse and locate your image.
