Can one hide backfaces?

Maybe I missed it for looking, but is there a way to hide [not show] the backfaces on items in D/S [for purposes of rendering]?

Yes, kinda - there's a thread somewhere on making a double-sided material using Shader Mixer, you could apply that with the back-facing material set to fully transparent.
Realistically, does that technique really reduce processing in a significant way?
If the branches for the back-facing polys were much simpler than those for the front facing polys, perhaps, but as I understood the question it was about visualisation, not system load.
