Do you mean icons in the Content area, Smart Content, or Scene/Objects/Shaders etc ?

You can use the Large Preview/Small Preview buttons at the top of the pane at the bottom of the interface, but that is all that you can change as far as I know. The ones in Scenes/Objects etc, are saved a part of the .CAR files, and do not have a separate icon.

The ones in the Content and Smart Content should have an associated .PNG file with the same name, and that can be changed to another image, but the size would remain the same as far as I know, is that what you mean?

Thank you for your answer Jimmy,
it's exactly what I mean (sorry for my poor english). In fact, most of of the time when I save an object in "Scence/object…", the preview is not very good (not enough large). After that, it's very hard to find something. I'm disappointed to discover that there is nothing to do. :(

I don't know of any way to change the size of the icons, other than the Small Preview/Large Preview, but someone else may be able to help. I haven't been using Carrara for very long.

I know that there have been many requests to be able to change the font to a larger size as well, to make it easier to read.

The best way that I have found is to use a product called P3DO Explorer Pro. This allows you copy and paste in your own image, so you can frame your thumbnail exactly as you would like. It does lots of other things as well, but my own main use for it is in editing the thumbs for product releases. Note you need the Pro version, there is a free version but it doesn't have the thumb editing feature.

Yes, like Philw I also use P3DO (even though I'm not a vendor, It was worth it to me to save thumbnails I could easily visually identify for my various shaders etc)

I bought P3DO Explorer Pro a few months back for that very reason, but I have yet to use it. Is there a walk thru for that process somewhere out there?

Yes Phil, I saw that, but if I don't make a mistake, it's only for PC, not for Mac.

Looks like you are right, but it does say that it should work under a Windows emulation if that is any use to you. I am not aware of any other products that do this. Ringo recently posted a method which involves editing the .CAR file to change the shader:

  • Is P3DO still the best was to change thumbnails and does it run OK under Windows 10?

  • TangoAlphaTangoAlpha Posts: 4,584

Yes it does. 2.6.2 (August 2018) is the latest release as far as I know.

Back up your .car file before you run it though, cos it can be a bit buggy, and it sometimes produces a file that then won't open.

  • Thanks guys, I had a look at the .cbr file and it seems to be an archive txt file with the image embedded as a byte array and I was thinking of having a go at programming Python to read the thumbnail which I think is housed between TVPr {...here...}

i manually transfer thumbnails by copy pasting with notepad. (the byte arraysmiley)

first i do a scene render to make the thumbnail i want. render with preview.

  • I'm still waiting...

  • Just arrived - so I'll give it a whirl...

  • Works a treat...

..the only think I would say is that when you use the beautifully iconed shaders by either dragging them to the shaders tab or directly over an object Carrara recalculates the icon for the copied file - WHY???

BECAUSE - any alterations to the shader need to be updated in the thumbnail - so, the developer decided to just program a sub-routine to do this automatically upon changes to the folder !!!
