Weird behavior selecting parts of a model...

On a Mac. Catalina. 10.15.7

 

Up until yesterday when I put a model in a scene I could click the arm or leg or whatever and move over to use the dials to adjust them. Now that doesn't work. It stays selected on the whole figure.

I have to go up to the scene tab and search for or browse to the element I want to move then use the dials. 

I think I've messed something up but I don't know what. Any thoughts?
