Hope this is the right place--Question about content library

edited December 1969 in The Commons

Instead of Public/documents/My Daz Library/ ( win 7 64) Is there a way that I can install daz 3d on my external hard drive? Or is my only option to create a folder on my external and point daz 3d to it as a content folder?? I ask because I have steam and origins installed on my Main Hard drive and that takes up a bunch of space, and I have alot of empty space on my external?

Yes, but some things you want to consider.

    • Run Studio and any plug-ins from your internal drive, because most of that doesn't change and limits the change of destroying something you can't replace since the App and the plug-ins are generally off an installer and can be easily replaced and updated.

    • Is your drive going to be fast enough that your work in DS doesn't lag.
A USB 2.0 drive is going to chug along opening, saving, loading assets, textures and navigating libraries, lagging will be less noticeable on a USB 3, ESATA but you may actually speed things up on a secondary internal drive (SATA 3GB/s or 6GB/s) which are cheap these days. the top speed of the drive is determined by the motherboard btw. If you have an SSD drive it can be incredibly fast but I don't recommend them for long term saving, writing and deleting, all that degrades and the degradation gets worse the faster the drive is rated.

    • Along with your libraries you should also point your data files to the 2nd drive in the event your main HD crashes. When Studio saves it creates data assets, if you don't have these when you restore all your existing scenes may fail when you attempt to load them. This also makes it much easer to perform backups.

Thanks for the fast reply, it will only be my content library on my external and it uses a 3.0 USB. It's a 1tb seagate, idk the specs but yea. I might just install origins and steam on my external and keep Daz on my main.

That is exactly what I have done, but instead of an external drive it gets saved on a secondary internal drive. I prefer keeping huge content libraries all on a seperate drive.

USB 3 should be fine, I can't tell you how much slower than SATA 3/6 but probably not noticeable. Seagate usually makes great drives and I've used them to build with for decades. I've had too many bad incidents with Western Digital to use or recommend them but that's me any the computers Ive serviced.
