UltruMarine for Poser - just released! (Commercial)

Hi everyone - Marshian produced some really rather wonderful oceanic sets for DAZ Studio that left me, and others, wishing for a Poser version.

I've taken on the responsibility of producing Poser versions of a couple of sets. The first one to be ready is "UltruMarine for Poser" - although I cant' give you an precise release date because I don't have one!

It's not an EXACT duplicate of the DAZ Studio version so much as it's a Poser version - so it has some minor differences, including a couple of IBL light probes and also the (optional) use of Poser's depth cueing.

Using Marshian's set in Poser has been a real pleasure - scenes seem to just naturally fall into place it's so easy to create underwater imagery!

Indeed, one of the biggest problems I am having is moving on from producing either more UltruMarine images or tweaking them to add more into the image each time I revisit it.

Cheers,

Cliff

How easy is it to use and produce good images? Well, let's put it this way - these two promos were done almost completely by my 13 yo son, based on/inspired by promo images for the original DAZ Studio version (they are James's interpretation of the scenes rather than trying to slavishly copy the original promos).

    Cheers,

    Cliff

(I tweaked the Ambient Occlusion effect on the sharks - mostly by Digital I - and I did the sand texture on the sandcastle).

One of the big problems is that we had too much fun putting some of these scenes together, and tinkering with the scenes. Here's a promo that we couldn't leave alone without at least a QUICK go at putting in a giant octopus. Because, you know - we could.

So - which one do you think was my quick "this is where I'd put an octopus", and which one do you think was my sons (these shouldn't be considered final renders, just us mucking about after the project was submitted).

    Cheers,

    Cliff

    Niiiiiiiiiiice!

Apart from that: guessing - yours is the one where the giant octopus is to the side of the wreck and your son's with it on top of the wreck?

So this should work in poser 2012. I have yet to get 2014.
If so wonderful news! I will hopefully get this one.

Thanks for guessing - and even more thanks for being right. I wanted to see the effects of depth cue, where James was more concerned about having the octopus interact with the suken ship "possessively". And, for some reason, glowing eyes :sigh.

Here's another shot based on one of the original promos, and another of my own based on some real-life photos.

No problem. I'm one of the old school, that really likes the Poser software, but really likes the content from DAZ.

Not only were all the final promos done in Poser Pro 2012, but in fact I deliberately tested back as far as possible. Poser 6 is NOT recommended, seriously. Poser 7 and up work well, but for their Gamma Correction and Indirect Lighting capabilities I'd prefer to use Poser Pro, Poser Pro 2010, Poser Pro 2012, Poser 10 or Poser Pro 2014. Because those capabilities can have a really beneficial effect on renders.

That's all the versions I tested with :)

    Cheers,

    Cliff

Well - yours was better balanced from a composition point of view ... the other one: ever played something like King of the Hill? It reminded me of that ... "my ship, my ship ..."

LOL - "King of the Hill" is actually one of the games we've played in the park - with nerf guns. Basically I had to come up with as many games as I could remember that would allow him and his pals to shoot each other...

But I digress. Long, long ago (or so it seems) there was a film called "Finding Nemo" which provided us with a catchphrase for James that lives on to this day - to whit "Mine. Mine mine mine mine".

PS they've also got some lovely water in that movie, definitely a source of inspiration for me!

You've... never.... nope, can't process that.

But it does look like we're running through the movies that we've taken phrases from to tease my son with - and "Precious" is indeed something he mutters in the dark, often while clutching some new WarHammer 40K Ogre or some-such (shakes head).

We're rather fond of prehistoric critters, and I KNOW my son was working on a "marine reptile fishing" image (for the same reason I wanted to have some whale imagery - and the same reason we both produced shark images. Because we could!). I don't know how far he got because I can't find it, so that will either have to wait till after school or I may just put something together myself.

We need more prehistoric critters though. If you're reading this Digital I, I want more marine reptiles! Does anyone know if there are any "flock" or "school" creation python scripts? I might have to do it manually, or maybe write a script. Hmmm...

Ah... {glances at topic}. Roll up, roll up, there's even reflection?

I need to work on my patter :(

Anyway, I thought this was a nice twist on one of Marshian's promos, having the mermaid reach up towards the water/air boundary... and then I came onto the forum and noticed that he'd posted a similar images months ago. Well - there goes my shot at originality!

    Cheers,

    Cliff

    Reinventing the ... mermaid? ;)

Look for Dinoraul at Renderosity (I am not allowed to link) - you will find a LOT of underwater prehistoric beasties!
(You probably have to hit the Jackpot first to be able to buy them - LOL)

The problem with DinoRaul's store is that my wallet rarely escapes from a visit there without becoming around a hundred dollars lighter - and it certainly doesn't need another diet right now!

Though... hmmm... several items over there appeal - and I know my kid would like the Kronosaurus, even if the texture is a bit unexpected (more "seal" than "crocodile"). Maybe if UltruMarine for Poser does well I can stock up on more critters for next time... but for the moment this will have to do as I've got to pop out for a while (picking up James from school with a heavy WarHammer 40K parcel, then off to fetch the wife from work before coming back here to see how sales are going).

    Cheers,

    Cliff

NB this is based on my recollection of what we chatted about - it may be quite different to what my little monster has done!

    Glad you like it :D

As with pretty much everything I do for Poser, this is something that I particularly wanted myself - for my own work, I tend to find that an active interest in the specific thing I'm working on really helps :D

    Cheers,

    Cliff

PS render, render, find a render... actually there's a page of thumbnails showing the various Dolly camera pre-sets that I don't think REALLY shows the views as well as I'd like. For example, this image I think is glorious - it's just the camera pointing down through the air/water boundary at the sandy seabed below, but I just really like the way it looks - even without a predatory beast in shot!

You are welcome, Cliff. The realism of the water effects definitely convinced me the first time I saw the renders posted in this thread.

It is a very long time that I am looking for an underwater scene renders system and I have found what I wanted thanks to you... :)

I agree that the latest render that you have posted is really beautiful. I think that such a nice render features the richness of your UltruMarine set very nicely. :)

Wishing you lot of sales! :)

If you get a chance, please post here - I don't have any V4 mermaids so ended up using Genesis for the mermaids (I figured that a Very mermaid would just look too outdated in this set).

Poser folk seem to be quite liking this set :D

    Hi Cliff,

Instant buy and looking forward to other sets you may do.

Just a quick note though to say that I just got around to installing it and there are no lights in the install. Installed via DIM and downloaded separately, no lt2 files. Will raise a ticket.

Thank you HUGELY - you've no idea how frustrating I find it when my products go awry, and how much I appreciate being given a heads-up so I can chase DAZ on it and get the issue rectified as quickly as possible. Which I've done even before responding here.

In the meantime - it doesn't provide a full solution but if you load the "UltruMarine Ocean.pz3" scene file from :

    :Runtime:Libraries:Scene:UltruMarine Ocean

you'll find that it has the fullest, most complete and flexible light set built-in.

After that... Marshian and I have been chatting about a number of team-up possibilities, and there's certainly more heading your way from us. He's an incredibly talented guy and I know a bit about Poser :) so this should work out really well. I don't want to pose any renders or tease possible product titles at this point, especially given how much time it takes me to do my bit, but I think you'll be please. Heck, we might even get the lights included with future sets right from the date of release! ;)

There's also the remote possibility of... well, all sorts of stuff. Watch the store - but don't expect a sudden release rate of one a week! Or even one a month :(

    Again - thanks. I can't fix what I don't realise is broken :(

    Cheers,

    Cliff

I use both Studio and Poser but still mainly a Poser guy so when DS only stuff comes out I think twice. Had already bought Marshian's UltruMarine Ocean for Studio and the Poser version was great news. Any sets which support both will get my cash over ones that don't.
Will keep an eye on the store for your next instalment :)

    Absolutely!

Actually, a fix should already be in the works - even though it's the weekend the DAZ elves have been busy finding out where my lights went and re-attaching them to the rest of the set. The DAZ Install Manager isn't listing it as updated, so I'm assuming that the servers aren't fully synched yet - but I expect them to be within an hour, two at most (I'll almost certainly be asleep by then so may not be able to check again before the morning).

A workaround is OK - but a proper fix is better - especially as it fixes the product for everyone else!

That's one of my favourite aspects of the whole "community" - that we aren't selfish, but help each other out. It's probably why I'm still around after so many years - for the people as much as the tech :)

    Cheers,

    Cliff

PS I know what you mean about the DS-only stuff - I prefer stuff that works for as much software as possible - Studio, Poser Bryce, Carrera... I even have a penchant for MIMIC! the trick as far as I'm concerned is to tailor to each platform, rather than producing something to the lowest common denominator. At least, that's our aim.

Hiya Cliff, long time no see!
Glad to see such awesome thing tested in P7, which I still prefer over P10 (stupid interface). You say renders in P7 won't look as good as promos, but will they look better than, for example, this oooold P4PP render?

Need an answer since I have b-day soon (and way sooner than DAZ soon ^.^), this would be an amazing gift for myself :)

Hiya Vilian! I've been around...sortof. Just kinda busy. Having a teen son takes it out of me!

I would personally give a resounding "Yes - it should look better!" but I think it would be best if I fire up the Poser 7 virtual Box and render something for you.

I can't find that toonish hatchling dragon though (I lost a lot of content a while back and am only slowly re-installing) so bear with me a bit while I decide what to render...

It was always going to be a shark, wasn't it? LOL.

I've tried to show as much as possible - it's Poser 7, the shark is 500% scale, and the oversized thumbs don't work as well in Poser 7 as they do in Poser 8 and up unless you've got a REALLY tall monitor! (I would cut them down in a paint program for regular use in Poser 7).

Render settings are at Poser 7 default. Did I forget anything?

Hah! I should have remembered that the Hatchling Dragon libraries start with "UD" :rollseyes

Still - this gives me an opportunity to show that you can easily change the scale of the wave pattern so that it falls on your figures/props at the size you want.
