Finding MANY copies of the same materials
Hello Everyone,
Ok first off I am using DIM to install content and I have two runtime paths (Daz and Poser, which I think is fairly standard). I am not having any problems with loading content, and the database still seems to be holding (I haven't upgraded the database yet to Postgre ...yes I know dragging my feet but I have been a little busy lately). The last few days I have been going though and cleaning up my categories and organizing my runtime. I am not moving files around just reworking and updating the Catagories.
Now the thing is, while going though my runtime I have found a LOT of duplicates of materials for some products. This is never on the Daz side/path always the Poser path. For example I found two different folders of materials for Pen Hair in Poses folder. But this is not the only hair with this issue, several others are doing the same thing. Other products that seem to have a lot of duplicates are Space Dweller and Shelter. But there are quite a few others.
It has me scratching my head as to why there are a lot of materials (usually duplicates) in the poses folder (poses/prodcutsname) instead of the materials folder. Anyone have a clue? I assume I should always use the textures in the Daz path if possible since it should be optimized for the Daz rendering engine (3dDelight), still it seems odd to be finding so many copies.

While I'm unsure of the exact answer, I vaguely recall some products had materials for both the P4 and Poser Pro versions of poser, in addition to the .mc6 materials and the older .ds and newer .duf formats. Plus sometimes DAZ Studio will display duplicate thumbnails, although I don't recall the fix offhand or if it applied to materials; I know I have to track that down and clean them up, I've been finding double thumbnails again recently for some reason even though I cleaned those up once in the past.
Are these cases where there is one copy of material presets in the Materials library and another in the Pose library? That's because (a) many long-time Poser users were used to using the Pose library for materials, before the Materials library was created, and (b) other software, such as Carrara and DAZ Studio before DS4 didn't see the Materials library.
Interesting so at one time there wasn't a Materials folder/library? Now that makes sense. I had no idea, I started with Poser 5 (then took a hiatus for a few years) and seem to I recall that had materials. Ironically I watched a video talking about poser content and the runtime folders (including its history) but never mentioned that fact.
Regardless it sounds like I could clear out some of the older textures/materials.
