Digivault's New Dropship

Can't praise the visual quality of this model high enough. It looks beautiful!

The only down sides seem to be in articulation... The chin-mounted gun turret does, indeed, only traverse. Elevation (up/down motion range) is impossible. Seems like quite the oversight, because there are cameras mounted on the same turret and they're actually facing down at a different angle to the guns! No way to align them both. Makes it look a little strange if posed in flight, as both elements should be facing the same direction. Not able to be used for looking as if it's engaging ground targets while coming into land.

Same goes for the VTOL 'pods' on either side: The way they're spaced apart, it seems as if they were designed, from the very start, to be able to swivel. Unfortunately, they're static and can't be moved (not even by manual trickery, as they can't be separated from the model). Posing them for looking like it's undertaking some unique aerobatics (or even reverse-flight) is impossible.

Nonetheless, as the landing skids and cargo bay door are retractable, it's a great model for static 'lifting off' or landing scenes. Just not very optimised for using in any combat scenes. :) Will absolutely be using for an upcoming project of mine which needed a futuristic combat transport landed and disembarking personnel. Just wish it had more articulation so that I could use it for even more diverse situations. Hats off to the actual ship design and texturing, though. If those above aspects ever get fixed in an update, it'll be perfect.

    Hi Xenomorphine

Thanks for the write up. Glad you like the ship.

The customer is always right so here's what I'm going to do for a valued customer. I'll tweek the weapons for, make them more articulate, and upload them to a dropbox folder and send you a link.

    Gimme a couple of days.

    How does that sound?

    Pete

PS What's your upcoming project? Something cool I hope;-)

Thanks for replying! Sounds excellent, much appreciated! :)

Actually two projects, but the main one is an 'Alien' motion-comic fan-film, which will be getting hosted at AVP Galaxy and should get a lot of publicity for any assets I use in it. This model has just the right look for the technology of those movies (and you'll be pleased to hear your Red Zone, Aftermath and Biohazard sets will likely feature, too). The other is a possible book on how to design spaceships, but that'll be a collaborative effort with a friend and isn't yet definite.

It'll get a lot of use, either way. :)

Hey DigiVault! liking the Dropship too, but agree with Xenomorpine, a few articulation points that were overlooked. The cockpit canopy, the guns, the camera, and the VTOL units. I think a lot of customers would like a tweaked version of the ship ;)

Add me to the list of people who bought it and would gladly pay for an expansion, mainly a way for the crew to get into and out of the cockpit.

Absolutely beautiful ship, looking forward to more ships.

I haven't rendered it yet but bought it immediately- thanks for all the wonderful details- this will look good no matter what camera angle is used :)

Is there any chance that you can make this available to other customers who have purchased your dropship? I too purchased it and would love to see additional movement for the chin gun and VTOL pods.

    Hi Guys.

All are welcome to the weapons upgrade. I'll post a link here.

The VTOLs were never meant to rotate I'm afraid and would require a big mesh rebuild. I appreciate the feedback though. This was my first spaceship / aircraft and took six weeks to build but I'm happy with the way it turned out. So much so that my next project is another bigger ship. Fully articled too;-).

I'm in work today (up a 50 meter tower with a huge lens and camera, long story) but will get stuck in first thing in the morning and the upgrade should be ready later in the day or Tuesday morning at the latest.

Thanks for adding the additional gun rotation, and I can understand the VTOL units being a no go without having to redo the whole mesh. I am looking forward to next ship coming in the future.

Got it, will do. Many thanks.

So much so that my next project is another bigger ship.

    Sounds great!

Looking forward to seeing more ships from you. My personal preference (at this time) is smaller, 3-4 man Scout ships (something between the size of the Shuttlestar and Vanguard) but will no doubt grab whatever you come up with (based on the quality of this one).

    Thanks again,

The ship will be about two or three times as big as the dropship. Anything bigger than that won't look so good in close up I think.
