Tubes?

Quick question that I'm sure I should already know the answer to:

I decided that I would check out a freebie site that I've heard about, just to see what sorts of things are available. I intended for this to be a quick venture, "just a few minutes," I told myself. Know one warned me that one freebie site would kindly provide links to their freebie sites, all 10 of them. Of course, each of those link to a dozen others, and the evening just keeps ticking away! Here I am two hours after I set out to take a "quick peak," with more downloads than I care to admit and will likely forget about, just to download again the next time I see it!

Anyway, the question... several sites have referred to "tubes," particularly those that offer mostly toon items. Are they connected? What IS a tube? Thanks in advance for clearing this up!

A term from PSP, essentially a brush or image with no background.

    Awesome, thanks!

So if I understand correctly it's kind of like a vector? An image with a transparent background?

Pretty much, yes, it is any kind of image with a transparent background.

Not a vector; picture tubes are strictly raster. But yes, they're images with a transparent background. Usually several in a set, and then when you use the picture tube tool in PSP, it selects different images from the set based on different settings.

Most of them are pretty scrap-booky, but there are a few that have wider applications. Personally, I prefer the ones that combine to a new effect, such as the pink and green neon ones that come with PSP (which is why I expanded my color selection on those.)

Tubes are a less precise term for stock images in photomanipulating jargon. They refer to images without a background (PNGs) or with one-colour ones (PSDs, for instance). One has to bear in mind many sites which refer to tubes instead of stocks MAY be cutting them out of copyrighted artworks. I had to report a site which used to to that once - the owner butchered several of famous artists' pictures without their permission and posted as tubes, so be warned.

That's disappointing! I wonder how effective reverse image searching of the promo pic would be at determining if this had happened? I'd hate to purchase something and use it, then later find out it had actually been stolen from the original artist!

That's the problem :(. When I reported that site, I was certain as the person stole paintings and only cut them out of their backgrounds, but generally, it may be tough. I recommend using verified DA stockers, Pewter7 and FreeStock.ca for photomanipulations.
