"Look at my Hair" under partial clothes? (with only the free player)

Somehow when working a scene with "Darwin the toon Chimp" I put a tank top and hat on him and it blocked the 'hair' from LAMH for the parts of him covered by the clothing.
Then my scene crashed while attempting to save...
And I cannot figure out how I managed to do this, if it can be repeated, or if it was a "lucky glitch" or something that is only supposed to be possible in the full version of LAMH.
Does anyone know what I managed to do, and if it can be reliably reproduced?

only way I know using full version, is to paint density maps, I do this in carrara too
So I guess I just landed on a lucky glitch... I had a render of it too, but I didn't save the thing.
My workflow was a little weird:
I loaded the hairless version of Darwin the Chimp. Put clothes on him, posed him. Looked at that and thought... he'd look better with the hair...
So I loaded in the hairy version, and copied the pose over. Then 'fit' the clothes to the hairy version. Then deleted the hairless version.
Then I saved.
- And then I rendered and noticed the hair was stopping anywhere there was clothing "over it".
Then I tried to move a pose... and it crashed...
When it came back up... it refused to load in the hair... so I had to delete Darwin and load him in again... and this time the hair was poking through.
