is OK, a lot being discussed here
I usually go for 1000 or more for the upper limit
It's really fun to break into parts of Carrara that are labeled as legacy, old or have higher-end, newer counterparts or replacements.
Fountain was used for a whole lot of basic particle simulations in a lot of early basic particles tutorials back in the day, until one day they kind of felt shunned from mentioning, even though I'm sure it can be quite useful for helping to get many effects into our scenes quickly.
Metaballs in the particle simulator is still an excellent option for generating running or splashing water, even though Fluidos is utterly Incredible!
For years I've had a lot of fun with the Fog primitive at a time when we forum members were told on a near-daily basis to avoid it because it's not volumetric. Hint - sometimes we don't really care whether a thing is an actual Volume, so why be burdened by "Don't Use It" rules?!!!
On my site's Inspiration area within the Gallery, you'll notice that some of the things I like to learn from are from older times - filmmaker practices from decades past (The William Forsche page in particular!). This isn't to say that I prefer their look or style or that I'm attached to their way of doing things, but rather use it as a reminder that, when I need to achieve something, I'm fairly certain that I can find a solution using the tools that I have, rather than having to Subscribe to (and learn from the ground up) some software that's obviously aimed at being sold to high-level studios with big budgets.
So in a lot of ways, I like to take on more of a strategy like the visual effects crew of the original Star Trek. They had such a small budget that many of their props for major set pieces were made from things they sought out in garbage cans near the studio or their homes!
It blows my mind that Carrara is considered to be Legacy, yet we can load AVI and/or MOV files as well as sequenced images as nearly anything that can take a texture map! It blows my mind even further to try out the new Daz Studio to discover that it still doesn't have this natively. There's a wonderful plugin made by a very wonderful and generous plugin developer that allows this to be done for one texture within DS, but in Carrara, it's like having a glass of juice in the morning.
So with a little help from a video editor, one of my plans for making rivers and such (years ago I was thinking this) I could render the motion of Carrara's Ocean primitive animating along, edit it to be the speed and effect that I need, and just use that footage as a texture map on vertex water shapes in the riverbed. That's just one example of the fun, simple and yet effective ways that we can truly do some Amazing production work in and with Carrara!
Oh my... am babbling again? I'm sorry... I am.
Oh I use the fountain a lot
it uses voxels in Octane
and you can replicate stuff on it
Ever see Peter jackson's Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring?
The Balrog was impossibly Awesome! That will visually stand up forever they've done such a great job!
Well another hobby I have is to watch Behind-the-Scenes featurettes and documentaries, Te Extended Editions of those films came with a Massive wealth of this. In it, they explain how they made him look so firey - particles got them close, but it still didn't look like fire - until they used actual flames as the textures of the particles!
So I tried this on Demoncornuto. While it didn't turn out even close to being as good as what Weta Digital did, it showed that: if I continued to tweak it for a needed shot, uh... yeah! We could get really amazing results - and from our Amazing Carrara Legacy App!!!
I'm not begging or even wishing, but I truly thing that Daz 3D could be even stronger a 3DCG market by investing back into further development of this incredible suite of amazing tools. That's just my opinion.
Woah! Sorry to seem Off Topic here - I really didn't mean it to be. I was inspired to say all of this because of the incredibly wonderful results shown of the Basic Sky feature of Carrara!
Great job, by the way!
curious what the starry is made of. alpha mask on a sphere, or replicated lights mebbe?
Mustn't forget the crescent!
Love your work, FENgari!!!
