Slightly Confused - just a quick question on the new Genesis line
Hi folks,
I've been away from Daz for quite some time (about a year and a half) and am looking forward to picking it back up again. The recent changes have got me somewhat confused however and I'd like to avoid making an expensive mistake!
When I left, Genesis had literally just been released - my latest Daz version had shipped with the base Genesis model but I'd not yet bought the Genesis morph pack or any skin materials, so it really was just the blank I owned. Which was being billed as the only base model needed for both male and female characters with additional morphs.
Now I've redownloaded the new version, it has the Genesis 2 male and female base figures instead of the single Genesis blank. (I'm guessing as time has moved on, going back to a male and female separate base has proved to give more diversity and control/less mesh deformations on transformations?)
Do the original Genesis morph pack/Genesis skin materials work on the Genesis 2 figures or is it best I simply skip straight into Genesis 2, forget Genesis ever existed (as I really wasn't around when it happened) and purchase the Genesis 2 Male & Female morph bundle instead? And start building up my skin materials again from scratch?
I'm sure that's all pretty obvious to everyone who's been here for a while but I'm somewhat scratching my head with the changes :) (although am looking forward to exploring them).
Thank you for helping out an old/newbie.

Hi and welcome!
First I'd like to say that I think you are wrong about one thing: it's not necessarily obvious to people who have around a while! I think many are not clear on this question, or at least are torn.
I think you are in a better position, in a way, in regard to going from G1 to G2, than say someone like myself, as I've invested a lot of money and time in G1. However, when I started, Michael, Victoria, et al were the thing and Genesis was still that grey humanoid blob that you really weren't sure what it did. I fairly quickly saw the benefits of it though, as content for Genesis started to pour in, and I as didn't have a whole lot for Gen 4 it wasn't much of a wrench. I think you are possibly in a similar position to where I was then, and I think I would recommend going for Genesis 2.
It isn't all bad news, in any case, as there are shapes/UVs, etc., of G4 characters that you can buy for G2 so that you can use earlier content on G2 and if you have Gen X you can transfer morphs from G1 and beyond. Whether these are worth it depends on your investment and attachment to older generation's content. For example, I have significant M4 content so buying Slosh's M4 for G2M was an easy decision. Also, much of the earlier wardrobe content can be used on G2 using autofit, and there are ways to get the more tricky stuff to fit (e.g. long dresses) if you scout around and don't mind getting your hands dirty. I would strongly recommend searching the forums or Googling any issues you come across as there's a good chance someone has solved them.
I wrote up a little history of DAZ figures, including information on the Genesis and Genesis 2 figures, cross-figure compatibility, etc. You can find it here. I hope you find it helpful!
Thanks folks, that's actually really helpful and clarifies where I was leaning towards.. I do have quite a lot of V4 & M4 content and have no problems with tweaking items - I've had very little chance to play with the autofit but used to use a clothing converter plus Hexagon to swap items around, so the autofit function is a great boon.
I'll certainly look out the M4 morphs for Genesis 2 as that would be really helpful. And indeed, as I have no investment in the original Genesis, that's a very good point.
Cheers for your response and the guide - all much appreciated!
DAZ 3D also did a compatibility matrix http://www.daz3d.com/compatibility-matrix
At present there is still ample reason to keep both G1 and G2 on hand. G1 is still the base of choice for any number of monsters, and a lot of people still prefer it. G2 is visibly more realistic and with add-ons can use a lot of gen4 content. Using gen3 content however needs G1 as a transitional stage, since the item needs first to be ported to Genesis, and from there to G2.
Depending on how much you want to reuse older content, you may need a number of add-ons to bring the basic gen3 and gen4 shapes and/or UVs over to the new figures. But picking up the basic morph packs is a good idea. Particularly since they are DAZ Originals and can be picked up on sale. The ethnicity packs could be useful too.
