Really getting discouraged these days
Since I am stuck att home, I've been trying to pick up on my artwork again... but I am feeling really discouraged. I updated to Poser 12, but Daz Products that use DSON don't work with Pose 12. So I installed my favorite software, Carrara 8.5 pro on my system. Genesis 3 and above still don't work properly in Carrara. They have bridges for unity, blender, maya, etc.... but I still can't load genesis 3 into carrara, their own product. Now, I'm sure someone will tell me that if I just set everything just so in Daz Studio, export into a different format while changing a dozen settings, then import the external format into carrara that I can get something into carrara... Clothes might not fit right, I can't repose it, morphs stop working.. but something loads. I was so excited with the Genesis line when it came out. I adore how I could load any clothing onto a character and have it fit.... And yes, I mainly used it in Carrara, my favorite software. I wouldn't mind buying a new version of Carrara to get the figures working, but that is not an option. Does anyone know why Carrara has been abandoned?
Really Discouraged today.

they have no resources ( money ) to update it... well, that's the reply I got from them a few years ago.
who needs Genesis stuff anyways when you got LoRenzo & LoRetta
and Carrara to do stuff with
for genesis 8

yes you need the Carrara plugin DAZ studio to convert hair and clothes to Blended weight
For Genesis 3 check out Misty's store at Renderosity while you check out the Genesis 8 freebie's
Misty has also done Carrara 8.1 - https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/469526/le-8-1-presets-beta#latest
All clothing and hair need to be converted & saved as Blended Weight in DAZ Studio.
EDIT : Wendy beat me to it !
He goes and gives it a try... "Well, the body seems to be working. The eyes are black pits after loading a texture onto him. The texture I loaded was Quenton. So then I loaded a second G8 Preset, copied the Cornea and Moisture textures over from the second avatar onto the first. That gave me eyes. Do you happen to have a link to instructions on how to convert clothing to blend weight so I can dress him?
with garment selected
edit/figure/rigging/ convert triax general to Blended weight
then save as a scene subset
can do each garment in and outfit and if genesis 8 is selected in Carrara when you load the scene subset it will conform each piece, may take a few minutes
this is my win 7 D|S4.14 beta but my other builds of D|S and on my Win10 I made a shortcut to do this
that is a bit harder to explain though
Follow the steps to save as Blended weight, then save as a Scene Subset in DAZ Studio, I normally add "bw" to the save name to identify it as blended weight
Note : If you want to apply a particular character morph to your character in Carrara, you will also need to apply the to your blended weight character in DAZ Studio for clothing & hair. Preset for 8.1 must also be the same size or there will be misplaced bone problems in Carrara. Hope everything works for you !
I'm happily working away on another Carrara animation - using lots of Poser format products with no problems. Not too many from DAZ in recent years, but lots from elsewhere coming out daily.
YAY!!!! Thank you, thank you, Thank you! Now I'm all happy! I got Genesis 8 into Carrara, clothing, and rendered all without crashing!!!
Looking good !!!
Misty Mystiarra has put an ENORMOUS amount of work into this... I cannot thank her enough for this.
Wendy, I love the idea of a shortcut. Can you make a tut for it? Doesn't need to be a vid... I like tuts like the old Winterbrose ones where he puts screen grabs right into a document then saves as a pdf. I can follow along much easier that way and it then tends to stick in my head better. I did that with Misty's early work with Genesis 3.

Great. Hope you offer some tips as you experiment with G8 in Carrara. Bunyip seems to have a workflow that takes advantage of almost everything. I have gotten the G8 figures to load with morphs, poses, and materials. The blneded clothing workflow for me preserves the clothing materials and pose/follow. Unfortunately for me, unlike Bunyip, my blended clothing does not match the figure shaping morphs. I will be following your progress with interest. Hope it is more like Bunyip.
Personally, I find that Genesis Generation X2 (GenX2) is the Best way to use newer (up to Genesis 3) Genesis within Carrara - because Genesis 1 is very compatible with Carrara, and GenX2 gives us the Genesis 2 and 3 as well as generations 3 if we also get the add-ons. It took me a while, because it certainly wasn't free. But now I find it to be one of the best investments I've made in quite some time - although there have been other excellent ones too.
Here's my first foray with GenX2
And then just within the last week:
This last one is nowhere near as honed as Rosie 5 was in the first one. I just decided to put something of a quick showcase together as an early timestamp so I can watch my own progress as I go.
Also, the support pages linked in their descriptions have many details about how they're made
if only there was a way to copy the face rigging to gn1 and 2
i remember some forum chat not liking the g2m pecs, but i really like the man boob to not be flat
reember danzig? hubba bubba
i'm rendering my very very first 4k render. i have never rendered larger than 2000 pixels. just occurred how weird that is. might try an 8k next. will let it run o/n
is weird, i have a 6 core and a 8 core, but i primarily use the 4 core, cuz its the quietest. i cant sleep in the same room with the other machines. gamer cases look kewl lit, but they noisy things.
Hi Dart,
Do you know if the UV are transferred as well?
There is no mention of it, so I suppose not, but who knows.
Does it work for clothes?
no not with GenX and Genesis 3&8 you cannot even use the DAZ studio map transfer, there are geograft solutions or use another texture baking method, I use Ultimate Unwrap3d repaint or Zprojection in Zbrush but Blender can do it too.
Rosie is looking more Alita-like now... love the big eyes! Silene
Philemo - No, it doesn't work for clothes and it doesn't transfer UV mapping. There are other products for UV Map trnasfer, I think. I don't look because Genesis 1 already has so many to choose from.
Silene - Rosie 5 has Much larger eyes than the new Rosie 5.5
I decided to dial them back a bit. Well... her whole head shape is different, so I actually had to dial them up, but they're much smaller than cute little Rosie 5's huge eyes! :)
whatever happened to lightwave?
I bought it many years ago (it came bundled with VUE as I recall) and kept up with the versions for a while. Then Carrara's seamless use of Poser content made me switch. More recently I won a copy of Lightwave, several versions newer than I had, but I don't use it. I *might* if I find some killer Lightwave content that doesn't import easily & completely into Carrara, but I'm not looking for that, just shopping Carrara, Poser & Vue mostly, some OBJ ...
LW is a great program, but for my needs with a LOT of Poser content, not as good a fit as Carrara.
