Is my GenX plugin obsolete?

I've recently started considering using G2F after a long time resisting because of my considerable library of V4 content.

I have Genesis 1 and, some time ago, I bought the GenX plugin which does not seem to be available any more. Instead there is a GenX-2 product at nearly $40! The note on the product page says I am too late to get an upgrade discount (which I consider to be totally unfair - I have other products like Reality which have no expiry date on upgrade discounts). Then, I gather, I would need to buy yet another add-on to allow me to get the morphs from Genesis 1 to G2F.

So my question is this: I would like to use my V4 characters (morphs) with G2F. Is there a path to transfer the morphs to G1 using my original GenX plugin and then using the transfer utility to get them across to G2F?

Here's the product's thread, perhaps you ask the Pa directly? http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/24079/

Though, as far as I know, you need GenX2 (which is the updated version of GenX), and in addition, GenX2 Add on for Gen 2:

There's 63 pages in that thread so it will take some time to dig through and probably not get an answer. Simple question - is the GenX product I bought useless or is there a way to use it in conjunction with the transfer utility? I don't see the point of asking the PA directly - why would the PA advise me on a way to avoid buying the updated product?

Simple answer: Because the PA is the person who knows their product best, that's why I would ask the PA.

    *shrugs*
Sorry if I'm not helpful, but there's no need to be snippish, you know.

Actually, your initial answer came across as "snippish", or the usual RTFM type response. FYI I have spent the last few days reading thread after thread, tutorial after tutorial and product descriptions. I only come back to ask a question when I can't find the answer I'm looking for. So you pointing me to a 63 page thread is possibly less helpful than a response from someone who might know the answer.

EDIT: Just seen your additional edit. It still doesn't answer the question. The Coupon is not available. I don't have the later version of GenX. So most of it does not apply to my question.
Ahhh . now you seem to have removed that edit.

The GenX still functions as far as it's use with Genesis and the shapes for Genesis. In lieu of a separate upgrade poduct, previous owners received money off the purchase of GenX2.

I don't know if this was a limited time offer or if it still holds. Best way to find out is to toss the GenX2 into your cart and check to see if the total is less than expected. If you don't see a reduction in price, submit a ticket to sales asking if the upgrade pricing is still available. It may not be as GenX2 was released some time ago.

Kattey has some tutorials on transfering morphs and creating clones without GenX (the links are in her sig). They might be able to help you. If you want the same ease you had with GenX then you would need to invest in GenX2 and the plugin for second generation of Genesis.

The simple answer: no. If you had a Genesis character, with some luck, you could get a quick and dirty version following this tutorial: http://fav.me/d6rrobg. But GenX2 with Gen2F/Gen2M Addon is totally worth its cost. Remember you will need proper Iconic Shapes for Genesis.

I think that Kattey's instructions for transferring from G1 to G2 will do exactly what you want.

Not necessarily. I don't use my "Iconic shapes" packages much. I've found most shapes you transfer from V4 or a G1 character to G2 look pretty good on a "close in shape" G2 character. You lose a little in overall shape, but you gain a lot in detail.

    YMMV

Thanks Wiz and others. I'm getting the idea now. Those tutorials mentioned look like they might do the job - I'll go through them.

@cecilia.robinson The price without upgrade discount might seem good value to you but to me, with limited funds, it is not. I mentioned Reality - something I use all the time, something that took Paolo years to develop and something that costs much less than GenX 2. I can justify Reality because I would not be happy with the results of all my efforts without it. If price is no object, then I'm sure that you are right and GenX 2 plus add-ons is a worthwhile investment.

In the meantime, I have been trying to use the original GenX product to test whether it still functions and, while it seems to complete and I can indeed find the completed files in the Morph tab, the new morphs don't appear in the Shaping Tab. I'll read the manual again to see what I'm forgetting.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried putting it in my cart but no discount was applied.

The discount expired last month or so I believe. Dimension3D put a warning in two of his product threads several months before the upgrade pricing expired. I'm sorry that you missed it. I think the biggest advantage to getting the upgrade is being able to directly transfer from V4 and also being able get morphs from the Gen3 teens and kids.

If you are short on funds, it's probably useful to get the morphs from V4 to Genesis using your copy of GenX, then follow Kattey's directions (or simply use the transfer tool using Genesis as base for both the source and destination) to copy the morphs over, then save them out to an obj. Then load those objs back in to get your morphs into G2F.

Send a ticket to sales asking if the upgrade pricing is still in effect. If it is still in effect, then you may be able to get an even better deal if DAZ decides to have one more catch up day where all PA stores are on sale. The upgrade price combined with half off price might make it affordable.

RMP currently has a sale on tutorials and software. I don't know if Reality is included in the sale but you might want to keep an eye on their pricing.

Sorry - I didn't mean to say that I was looking to buy Reality - I've had it for years. I was just comparing its value to me compared with a product that costs much more (GenX-2). I'll definitely buy Reality 3 as we've already been assured of a discount (unless DAZ starts giving away DAZ Studio 5 complete with a fully functioning Octane instead of 3Delight). ;-)

As it is, I've been advised to wait for the PC+ sale (someone said this month) and then join the PC in order to get discounts and sale prices. If I'm lucky, GenX-2 might be among them.

By the way, lee-lhs ... my apologies. I was a little miffed at being pointed to that long thread but no reason to be rude to you. I didn't mean it to come across as so rude, however.

On a more general note. The reason I missed the upgrade discount window was because it has taken me a long time to see any value in jumping on the G2F bandwagon. Indeed I was quite happy with V4 and all her characters and morphs.

However, I've recently started seeing more an more renders of V6, etc. on DevArt and she does look in a different league. So I've been tempted. The entrance to her world comes at quite a price though, hence me waiting for the PC sale in case I can grab some bargains.

Basically I am in the same boat you are. I invested heavily in Gen4, bought all the morph packs and more than 200 character sets, more than (shudders) 500 clothing items and was happy overall with all this stuff. Then, even though Genesis came and went and Genesis 2 hit, I abstained. But I have always been partial to Aikos look as a very approachable Anime item that can be made convincingly real. Then there was Aiko 6. Ok, that did it. I'm hooked. I bought it AND the G2F Head and Body morphs. The folders in the zip say 'Evolution'. This is a dangerous slippery slope and I know it well. I fell down this mountainside with V4 darnit, and literally spent thousands!!! But like you I've seen some excellent results using what I will now call Gen 6 Figures. Problem is, I may well have to spend at least another thousand $$$ just to get Gen 6 up to where Gen 4 is on my system right now, and be able to USE my Gen 4 content with the Gen 6 platform.
Which brings up: Where and how do I get the G2F and G2M GENITALIA now? I know they exist cause people are providing textures for them!
    Thank you in advance!

Well, I am not prepared to shell out for a pro bundle just to get the bits that real humans can't live without, so I went to Renderotica and bought the V6 "New Gens".

As for the G2M, I have not considered moving from M4 or Genesis for my menfolk but is it possible that M4 or Genesis gens might fit G2M? Otherwise it's back to R'otica.

EDIT: Just tried M5 Gens on G2M and, at zero pose, they seem to fit ok but as soon as you try to pose the figure you have an unholy mess of polygons :-(

Yeah I've seen a couple of 'transporter accidents' already just trying earlier generation clothes without that genX stuff. I got a lot of learning to do yet! I think I may check Renderoticas stuff myself. Even on sale, it's over $80 US for a pro bundle.
