Scene file not loading - Error Opening File - PLEASE HELP!

Hello -

I'm having an issue with a scene that will not load. I have been working with this scene for the last week or so, and have had no problems. Today I tried to do a quick render of part of the scene, and the render hung - took over an hour (usually takes less than a minute) and never did render. I tried to close it out and save the file, but got a failed to save file message. I closed DAZ, re-opened, and tried to open the scene, but now I get a message that says "Error opening file - An error occured while reading the file, see log file for more details."

I'm no expert with log files, so I'm not sure what it's telling me, and I hope that one of you can help me to solve this. I absolutely need this file for my job, and I am under a deadline and don't have time to rebuild the entire scene from scratch again.

Tried to attach the log file as a .txt file, but it would allow me to attach. I've pasted below the bits that seem relevant.

    Make a copy of the file and then try right-clicking on the file in Explorer and from the menu choose Restore Previous versions - if you are lucky you will have a recent recoverable copy and it will work. If not could you upload the .duf file and perhaps it will be salvageable, though I can't guarantee that.

    If you save when an application has had problems it's always wise to use a new name, so you don't overwrite the existing version.

    Thanks for the reply Richard. Unfortunately there wasn't a previous version available. I'd gladly upload it to you, but it's a BIG scene - 60 mb zipped. How can I upload it to you?

    I'm not going to pretend that I know what is happening here or that I understand the log file, but there are a few things that might be worth looking at or trying.
    A few lines down in the log file it says you have available 232.6 MB left of 7.2 GB of physical memory. That is 96% memory usage. See if you can bring that figure down by closing as many other programs as you can, and just running DAZ.

    You might also try making a copy of the original file and trying to open that. Or you could try opening DAZ and then attempt to merge with the file. Another trick might be to try to work out which one or two elements within the file might be taking up the most memory, because they are big or complicated, and then prior to opening the file, uninstall them. This would mean that the file may load but with missing elements. You could then break the file down into separate sub-scenes. Then you could re-install the missing elements and attempt to reconstruct the scene that way.

    But 8 GB of RAM is not really enough to run DAZ Studio nowadays. If you buy some more RAM (say another 8 GB) and put it in your motherboard the file will probably open OK.

    I don't think it normally uses that much ram - I suspect that may have just been part of the computer straining to open that scene.

    I've tried opeining a copy, and merging it, both to no avail. I've got all the different figures and other elements saved seperately, and they are all opening fine. I think something just got corrupted somehow in that scene file and I'm screwed. I don't really have the time to explore exactly which piece of the file is messed up. Since I have all the separate elements it's easier to just start over and re-pose the figures. Not idea. but what can you do?

    This won't help you now, but advice for the future: Periodically save a copy of your work so you have several points to fall back to when something goes wrong. Occasionally I find I've accidentally messed something up; deleted, moved, resized an item, changed a light, applied a material to the wrong object, etc. and I don't notice right away because the change is subtle or I'm working with spot renders and you only see the change in the final render days later. I may still loose some work if I have to fall back to an earlier version, but at least I won't loose it all, and I may even be able to open the older scene and retrieve whatever data I need (such as positioning info, or even saving a piece of the old, good scene as a subset and then merging it with the latest scene to replace a bad piece.

    As I said, I've been working with this file for about a week, and I have the habit of saving every time I make a change. I have no idea why there are no previous versions for me to work with. It's pretty frustrating, to be honest.

    Sean was suggesting saving under a new name - so save 00 initial set up, 01 added G2F, 02 hair and clothes for G2F and so on. I'm a bad about doing that with scenes, but I do it with images and models fairly reliably.

    60MB is pretty large, but you might be able to share it via DropBox or the like. However, I wouldn't hold out great hope of its being recoverable - I've seen several cases where the compression routine seemed to throw an error (in writing data for an external plug-in, though not always the same one) and so DS can't read the end of the file and complains that it isn't properly formatted. If you did haev compression on (which it is by default) it may be worth trying some kind of archive-repair tool, though I've no idea what is good; you coul;d even try expanding the .duf file with a dedicated archive tool (WinZip. WinRar, 7Zip or whatever).

    Ah, I follow you. I've been a full-time graphic artist for over 20 years - regular saves are second-nature to me, but saving with new names is a habit I should probably get into when it comes to stuff like this.

    I honestly have no idea if this is recoverable at all. The log file is less than helpful - I can't find any clues as to what the problem might be.
