    EP, those are gorgeous images!

Thank you again for your lights! The big render is done and they are looking great in it.
I tweaked them just a bit: I had to scale the whole thing down to fit my small scene. And I changed the positions of the light bulbs because I didn't want to render light through transparency.

For the post, I'm fixing the poke through, adding in the steam to the cup, some blur to the glow around the lights, some DOF and noise and vignetting. I might also play with contrast, color balances and other minor adjustments.

So here is my base image and my Layers list for the postwork in Photoshop. And the final image :).

For those trying to finish the entries in time:

    In case it's unclear:

Don't worry about submitting all the WIP requirements before the deadline! Submit your final entry on time and then submit all the required WIP, setup and raw images into this thread tomorrow (by 11:59 PST on December 25) - you can then edit your entry post to add in the links.

(Just be sure not to change the images in the entry thread - I'll be checking. :) )

    D-a-a-m-m-n-n! :coolcheese:

Very cool job! I'm blown away! I bet you could fool dustrider into thinking you bought Octane.

I hope you put a stipulation into the rules that says the host can't win, otherwise you may have to host another one!

Regarding the lights, I figured they would need to be adjusted for each scene. I used a medium scaled scene when testing the light range and fall-off. I think I had the range around two feet, although I could be remembering it wrong.

    Thank you! :)

Octane wouldn't even run on my machine - my graphics card was nothing to write home about even 7 years ago when I bought it. These days the cheapest motherboard graphics cards are better... And I love Carrara for being able to hold its own even when compared against the big guns. So I don't quite miss Octane that badly. Sure, it would be great to do some things faster, and I will probably consider getting Octane when I upgrade my machine. But for now, Carrara does what I need it to do just fine.

Thank you for reminding me - I need to write up some clear voting rules!

Same here. My rig is so old those mammoths in my picture are billboards I made from pictures of them grazing in my yard when Fred Flintstone delivered my computer.

My computer is so old, Steve Jobs didn't build my Apple, Jonny Appleseed did. ;-)

Sorry but first render is on an old fashioned ice field, final render when I get there will be of the ship entering the harbor of a large Island with cliffs on both sides and with a storm following the boat in. Would have liked to have done that for the Challenge !!!!!!

EP, I did have a low angle shot before, tried this one, definitely think I will follow your advice and go for the low angle.

Figures are just visible, on the first trial I did the figure had massive poke-through with the clothes, I didn't worry about the poke-through as it was not visible.

Will try variations on both of your suggestions (although the harpoons might not be very effective on those Klingons !!!!!)

Final render straight out of the Carrara box.
Just got a bit of minor post-work to fix up the hole in the bottom of the sail and to make that white shadow look more like a shadow.

I have also done a few Post-works using various filters.
Was not going to enter these, they are so people can have a sticky beak at some of the different effects that can be achieved.
(Would be nice if Carrara Version 9 had similar render effects {Wishful Christmas thinking})

Regarding figures on the ship, I'm with Antara. I don't think they would be that visible.

I know it is to late for this challenge, but to help make something seem larger, looking at it from a lower angle can make it seem larger. It could be as subtle or as extreme of a camera angle as you want.

Looking even slightly up would also hide the deck, which can eliminate the need for figures.

Now, having said that about the figures not being needed, putting something in the scene that the viewer can relate to in size also helps. Everybody has seen other people, so they are great shorthand for setting up a scene and establishing scale. However, the things that people commonly use can also be used to suggest scale without needing a figure. So, if your ship has visible portholes or windows, that can help. Maybe a rope ladder or something like that would work as well.

Just a couple examples of using low angles to suggest a larger scale.

    Hello EP

The boat does need a few ladders as well as a few more doors & some portholes along the Dragon would certainly add to the scene, might see how the renders look after I add those before I start on the crew.

    Many thanks, Bunyip

    wips :cheese:

first one was trying to use text for the modeling requirement, and then double checked the rules - said no text in image.

then thought i was gonna make a lava candycane, but cylinder wouldn't open in the model room. running out of time to do it in wings.

Aiko3 ice princess. replicated lava balls. luv those :)
learned a light could be assigned to a single obj! like that feature :)

learned 'point at' for lights and cameras is under add modifiers.

First of all, a clarification of the rules: as a newcomer, you don't need to create or model anything! So don't worry about it.

Also, you CAN have text in image, if it's the natural part of the image. Like having a picture of Hollywood hill would naturally include the text "Hollywood" there. So if this magical mountain of yours has a sign saying something to that effect, you can show it :)

But again, you don't need to model or modify objects as a newcomer! All you need is tweak a couple shaders in the image. And it seems you are already doing that to get the effects you are after. Plus you already have a terrain and replicators! Great work!

I am very impressed with what you could come up with on your first effort! And I am very happy that you seem to be enjoying Carrara and discovering its neat features. Once again, welcome! And I look forward to seeing more of your Carrara works. With the speed at which you are learning, you'll be hosting one of these challenges in no time.

And Merry Christmas! (if it's your thing, and if not, enjoy the night :) )

Good night and please update your entries to include full information in the morning. As I understand, your category is Newcomer (not either), and I think it would be easier for people voting if you include the tags for the information you provide as well, i.e.:

I voted. It is always difficult to vote in these challenges. There are so many worthy images. In opening the challenge this month, Antara framed it in terms of the NYC subway. My impression for ads in subways is that the DC ads tend to be political (we should keep or get rid of some class of navy aircraft, for example), which is not what I see when I visit other cities. When I was in Philly, the ads that I saw were for accident lawyers, for example. So when I looked at the images, I did a first cut based on my completely subjective impression of what would be the basis for an ad or public service campaign in the NYC subway cars. I tried to think of a few tag lines and imagine the render on the wall of the subway car with people sitting around it. My second cut was based on the suggestion that the image have an initial impact, and also invite additional exploration. That is why I strongly recommend that people view the images at full size. Despite those cuts, it was still very difficult to pick only 4 images. But I figured it wouldn't get easier if I waited. So I voted for

    - Entry #: 6, MDO2010, (That Crazy) Winter Jogger Is Coming
    - Entry # 11, Varsel, - Winter Queen is Coming
    - Entry #: 18, stringtheory9, Winter Powder is Here
    - Entry # 20, Antara, Winter Holiday Is Here.

Just a few thoughts for other entrants. Dudu, BooksbyDavid, and MistyWisky, in various drafts of my vote post, your images were in there. If I waited, I would probably change my mind again, and y'all might have been included, and someone else's image would have been left off. It is just so hard. It is gut wrenching to not be able to vote for all worthy images. Anyway, keep up the great work.

EP, I think you may suffer from the Michael Jordan syndrome. I could vote for your renders every month, sort of like Jordan could have been voted MVP every year, but wasn't. It isn't fair, but you will just have to step up your game even more, if that is even possible. :) In the future, I will try extra hard not to succumb to the Michael Jordan syndrome. But if you want to know my thought process, I loved your barn especially, but I thought some of the other entries had more to explore after the initial impression (same applies for with Fenric's fox). I don't know, if I gave it another look, I might change my mind.

And Pimpy, and Darwinsmishap, and Roygee and Fenric, and Chickenman, and Bunyip - I really enjoyed exploring your final renders in the entry thread and seeing how you put them together in the WIP thread. Pimpy, your image hit all the right factors. I am especially impressed at the image's ability to convey emotion through the pose of figures that don't have much room for movement. Bravo. Darwinsmishap, that is an exceptionally beautiful landscape. I learned a great deal from your WIPs. Thanks for the tips and I hope you keep participating. Roy, I especially like the man in the snowstorm because the lack of vibrant color conveys winter to me. Fenric, that is one foxy fox. The breath is the perfect touch. It is such a clean image. Beautiful. Chickenman, great job on the cloaks. The folds flow very naturally and the fur lining is exceptional. Bunyip, I am so glad that you entered your image even though you didn't have time to get your figures and your background the way you imagined. That dragonboat is an impressive piece of work and deserves to be entered in its own right. If my custom model of the bear had survived my computer repair, I would have entered my bear image even though the den, the beaver dam and the rest of the scene wasn't finished.

Antara, thanks for a wonderful month. And thanks to Daz and Jack Tomalin and Dogwaffle Howler for sponsoring.

Enjoy the holidays everyone. I can't believe I am the only one up in this house. The tree lights are on and the packages are so tempting.

    Hi Misty.

If it is the cylinder primitive from the Assembly room that you inserted, it needs to be converted to a vertex object. Go to Edit--> Convert To Other Modeler. Then choose the vertex option. This will allow you to open the cylinder in the VM, but you will notice it has a lot of triangles.

A better option is to insert a vertex object into the scene, and when the VM opens, select the cylinder (see screen shot) and then drag on the drawing plane. You will notice the curser change to +/- icon. If you press the + key, the resolution of the shape will increase each time you press it. If you press the - key, it will decrease. To commit, press Return.

A better way to create a Candy Cane may be to extrude a shape along a poly line in the VM.

    1) Select the poly line tool and click to "draw" your line. I tried the curve and interpolated curve, but found I had more control with the standard line tool. Even a very rough shape can look good when smoothing is applied.

    2) Select either the oval tool which creates filled polygon or the circle tool in the same dropdown as the line tool, which creates a circly but is not filled. I found I could scale the circle tool down more than the the oval tool, but I couldn't adjust the resolution of the circle tool, whereas the oval tool had option to press +/- to set the resolution.

    3) If you use the circle tool, you will need to fill it. With the circle selected, go to Model--> Fill Polygon.

I'll continue in the next post.

    Continued from above:

    4) With just the filled circle or oval shape selected, choose the Path Sweep tool (it looks like a bent pipe). Now, click anywhere on the poly line you drew earlier. The circle should now follow the shape of the ply line. Note that the original poly line is still there as a separate thing and is not incorporated into the new object.

    5) Select any where on your new model and choose Smooth on the right side of the screen. I adjusted my model a little because I didn't like the first part of the bend.

I consider myself kind of a novice with the VM. know what I know, but I'm not sure of all the more advanced stuff or the terminology. Diomede and others here are great resources for the VM.

In connection with the rules, I realize that all the titles (except mine) are based on the exact words of the theme.
Is this a theme or an obligatory title ?

You title can be your own, but all I ask is that you clarify the specific interpretation of the theme you have chosen - that's because the theme had blanks and was very widely open to interpretation. You can list your interpretation in parentheses next to your title or clarify it in the description. I think you've mentioned in your previous posts that for you it was something along the lines of "the last sunlight before winter is here"? Just as long as we clearly know how exactly you've interpreted the theme, it will be within the rules.

The honourable mention will be selected based on vote counts, so there is no reason to vote extra for it!
And the newbie category is panel-judged.

Therefore, Bunyip02, what should I count as your 4th vote?

As Noobie is panel judged, The Fox gets the 4th place.
Chickenmans work was still excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
